Animal Stole a Blueberry Plant from a Pot?

Are squirrels capable of literally removing a plant from it's pot without leaving evidence of it ever being there? I had a blueberry plant disappear from my covered deck yesterday with no neighbors to blame.

I dont think so. Animals just eat the food. If they tip over the planter they would leaves the dirt all over the place. I think a human took it.

Thanks, Judy, for the response. That was my first thought but hated to think it. It was very clean, like the plant never was. My squirrels are smart...but that smart? Thanks again.

Sounds like an innocent squirrel may be about to get blamed for the works of a "two-legged" thief.

  • Squirrels (and other animals) usually leave a mess behind when they find something of interest as usually there is only the attraction and nothing they want to carry off.

  • You say "no neighbor to blame" so you must feel there is no suspect close by, or, the space is "private" and difficult to enter & leave without a "trace".
  • It kinda sounds like it could be a prank that a younger person might think was funny as it is difficult to believe someone really wanted to steal a blueberry bush.
  • But then - we do not know the area; but hopefully it was just a one time prank.

The pot was on my covered deck about 5 feet from my back door and to see the plant from a distance would have been impossible. I have had solar lights taken in the past and last year some one dug up a beautiful hostas on the east side of the house.

I am in the city without deer but we have hawks, gulls, occasional owls, who knows? Thanks for the ideas.

you know what, the same exact thing happened to me last year with 2 tomato plants I had. It was such a surgical job that I was convinced some neighbor came with a trowel and ran off with the plants! People I've since spoken with say that squirrels and other animals are capable of doing that

your guesss is as good as mine

if i have a garden again i may install CCTV to find out for sure

I added a couple motion detectors around the area. I will never know for sure; I just have gotten more aware of people.

Probably not a squirrel, but it could have been another animal. If it was a small plant, they may have taken it for nesting material.

Most likely, if they are in your area, a deer is the thief. I have had deer take newly planted grape vines.
