All guys like to eat, I'd probably give a gift card to some restaurant or bake him something special. I don't know very many people that would turn down a box of chocolates or fudge.
A guy I dated once, pawned the pair of jeans, Western shirt, belt & belt buckle I gave him for his birthday to buy whiskey. Said he'd have rather had the booze. I never knew clothes could be pawned. This really burnt me on buying guys clothes, from them on.
New as in just a few weeks into the relationship. This is where an iTunes gift card would be thoughtful gift but wouldn't scare him off by being too expensive or too romantic.
If he doesn't listen to music (I'm be gobsmacked, ALL guys listen to music!), a gift card for books or a video game download might be something to tuck into a birthday card (which also is probably best not too romantic either).
Lol, I may be in my mid-fifties but as the mum of a 30 year old guy I know too expensive and too romantic scares guys in the first six months of a new relationship.
