Candy Cane Hearts - four finished heart candiesIf you look around when you're out shopping, you'll notice how quickly Christmas turned into Valentine's Day. Here's a fun and edible craft turning your old holiday candy canes and Christmas sprinkles into new hearts for your Valentine.

Total Time: 1 hour

Supplies:

Candy Cane Hearts - supplies

Steps:

  1. Preheat oven to 250F (I used my toaster oven) and line a baking sheet with foil. Place mini candy canes in pairs, facing each other, making hearts.
  2. Candy Cane Hearts - place mini canes on foil lined pan at 250 degrees

  3. Bake the candy canes in the oven for about 4 minutes. They should be soft enough that you can pinch the canes together to fuse the hearts together, not melted. If they harden up before you fuse them, just pop them back into the oven for a bit until you can work with them again.
  4. Candy Cane Hearts - bake for 4 minuted to soften and mash together to make heart shapes

  5. Heat up your candy melts with a double boiler or in the microwave at 30 second increments until smooth.
  6. Candy Cane Hearts - heat up candy melts

  7. Use a spoon to scoop little blobs of the melts into the centers of the hearts.
  8. Candy Cane Hearts - add to center of the candy cane hearts

  9. Use a chopstick to push the melts to the corners of the hearts, sealing the middles completely.
  10. Candy Cane Hearts - use a chopstick to spread evenly inside the heart

  11. Separate your Christmas sprinkles so you only have red and white. (Keep the greens for St. Patrick's Day crafts!)
  12. Candy Cane Hearts - separate your sprinkles keeping the green for later

  13. Decorate the tops of the melts with the red and white sprinkles while it's still soft.
  14. Candy Cane Hearts - decorate before the candy melts stiffen

  15. Move the tray of hearts into the fridge for at least 20 minutes to harden up.
  16. Candy Cane Hearts - place in fridge for about 20 minutes to harden

  17. The hearts will easily lift off the foil. Enjoy!
  18. Candy Cane Hearts - remove from the foil

We made these and they were a big hit. We used a lollipop stick and made "suckers" out of them.
