Have you checked your state's unclaimed property site? We had a similar situation for a family member and the bank turned over the money to the state. It took some gyrations and paperwork, but she finally got it all back. Having the uncashed check was needed.

Post back with an update on the status!

Is the money order made out to you with no flaws in the name/spelling?
Do you have proper ID with the exact name as on the money order?
I believe you may have to talk to a Fifth Third Bank officer to find out why you are having trouble cashing this item.

If a branch is not in your area, you may have to contact them to find out what you need to do.
There are 2 phone numbers so you might try one of these.
(Their website is not user friendly for the problem you are having.)

1-800-972-3030 - or (513) 579-5203

I do not believe they can 'keep' this money but since it has been several years they may have several forms etc. that you will have to complete.

If they give you reasons why they cannot give you the money then if you post back with that information, someone may be able to help you find an answer.

Fifth Third Bank is still in business and they have a website that you can use to contact their customer service. Here is the link - www.53.com/.../customer-service.html. You can find out the rules they have for money orders, how long they are valid, and how to cash one of their money orders to receive your cash.

I would start off here and work with the bank directly to find out how you can get the money that is owed to you.

My understanding is; a money order or cashiers check is the same as cash. There should be no expiration date on either. As said above, deal directly with the issuing bank, and don't take no for an answer. I have a restaurant gift card I just used that was given to me 21 years ago, it had no expiration date, I called first and asked, they told me that it was still good! Be assertive and don't let them pull the wool over your eyes by telling you otherwise!! Best of luck! Let us know the turn out!

It depends where you got the money order. I know some expire after 3 years.
