Child's Hair is Thin and Keeps Breaking Off?

My daughter is 8 years old and she has very fine, thin hair. It grows slowly and breaks, it does not grow long. Please give me advice. I sometimes think maybe it might be the shampoo that's too strong for her.

Your daughter needs to be seen by a qualified and competent medical professional ASAP.

I am allergic to sodium lauryl sulfate and have to be very careful not to use any shampoo or other cleanser containing it including toothpaste. The allergy causes my hair to break BUT it also causes red itchy patches on my scalp and skin and you don't mention that as one of your daughter's symptoms.

What you do say is that her hair is very fine and breaks easily - this is a clear symptom of a medical problem (nutritional deficiency or inability to absorb vitamins/minerals, etc or environmental exposure to lead, etc is my first thought).

I also have biotin deficiency and have to take supplements - it's very possible your daughter has the same, or some other deficiency/condition - do her nails grown slowly and break easily as well? Does she have very dry skin? All signs of deficiencies BUT also many other medical conditions which no-one here is qualified to address.

It is terribly important that you don't waste time asking questions on an Internet forum but get that child to a real doctor for real help!

She needs to be seen by a doctor as soon as possible. Please update and let us know the diagnosis.

I would take her to see a dermatologist. She may have Alopecia Areata. This is what causes young people to go bald prematurely. Sadly it does affect some girls. I hope this helps. Here is what webmd.com says.

Could be the shampoo...use a very mild children's shampoo. It could also be a lack of fiber in her diet. Hair and nails require fiber to grow strong.

Your shampoo has very little to do with the growth of your hair. I would look more into her diet. Eating healthy will help her hair. If she is not eating well, it will take approximately 3 months to notice a change after you improve her diet.

As far as the length, we all have different growth rates and different lengths to which our hair will grow.
