I have a septic tank. Our water is hard and very metallic smelling. It wreaks havoc on our showers. What product can I use to get rid of the soap scum that is also safe for a septic tank?

I agree with the magic eraser. Spray with diluted vinegar, wait for the vinegar to loosen the mineral deposits and use the magic eraser.

I bought a really good steamer, it heats water to 200 degrees and comes with different attachments. It does real good in regards to cleaning soap scum and making the tile grout white again.
CLR would probably work. Dawn dish detergent is also great for cleaning showers.
White vinegar is very good if used on a regular basis and it is also safe for a septic tank but more important is that it will not be slippery in your shower.
You can spray your shower walls down after each shower and do a more thorough clean up each week.
This is also a good solution to spray in your commode every night.
It is recommended to only use liquid soap as it does not usually build up soap scum as much as bar soap.
This site has some good suggestions and I did not see anything that would do harm to a septic tank.
Avoid bleach, ammonia, laundry detergent, and dishwasher detergents--and quite honestly, most chemicals.
Best to use something like the suggested magic eraser and elbow grease. Then once it is clean, keep up with it every day with a quick wipe down with a clean squeegee after each shower and let the squeegee air dry. Periodically give the squeegee a quick swish in a bath of vinegar/baking soda and hot water and let it dry in the sun.
Septic tanks are fussy critters so best to be as careful as you can what goes in, so it doesn't get it all fussed up and spew it out.
