A faulty gallon milk jug leaked a whole jug into the car's carpet. I have been trying to clean it since the leak occurred over a month ago. It still smells really bad, like something "died".

Purchase some of the charcoal they use in fish tank filters and sprinkle that in the area where the milk was spilled and leave it for a few days. It will absorb the odor. I have done this and it does work. If you can't find the charcoal, just wad up some old newpapers (not the colored ads) and put them on top of the area and after a few days the smell should be gone as well. If using the newpapers you might want to weigh them down with something heavy.
The problem may be that it has soaked through to the padding and the floor underneath. Putting something on top will not always take care of the problem. My suggestion would be to make a solution of baking soda and water, thin enough to penetrate the carpet and padding.
