Coconut Leaf Panels - several panels Here in Tahiti, we use a lot of coconut leaves around our home and even to make roofs. These panels are woven from coconut leaves and placed on the roof of homes. The leaves protect the home and keep the rain out. They also look great and give your home a very island look. The roof can last for 8 years before they need to be changed. Today a lot of people love the look on the inside of their home that the leaves give. They have found a way to keep this look and not need to change the roof every 8 years. Today a lot of people put down a plastic roof panel over the top of the leaves.

Total Time: 1 hour

Yield: 1 roof panel

Supplies:

coconut leaf
knife

Steps:

Split the coconut leaf down the middle using your knife. You will need to take the knife and clean a little of the stem off in order to make them a bit thinner at the top of the leaf.

Start at the bottom part of the leaf. Count in two and then lift up every other leaf until you have three in your hand.

Take the two leaves you left on the bottom and fold them over and lay them next to the stem.

Let go of the three leaves in your hand and now pick up the next three.

This is a weaving process and it continues on line this until you reach the end of the leaf. We never weave the very end of the leaf because it is too small to weave.

You will need to weave both sides of the leaf and then place them together.

To hold them in place you will use the lower part of your weaving and weave the two leaves together.

This forms one roof panel or even a panel you can use as a decoration in your home on a wall or as a room divider.
