My father paid all of his child support to my mother who had passed away in 2012. Someone recently told me that there is a list with my mother's name on it for child support back pay and they could not contact her to give her the money they were holding. I went to the child support offices in my county, they told me something about taking it to court and for what I really don't know.
I'm of age now, I'm her only child. That money should go to me, I am trying to support my own home and that money that has just been sitting there. It would really come in handy. If anyone knows what I can do to get them to hand over my money that would be amazing!

I'm not sure if you would be entitled to this money but it is possible it would be considered money left in your mother's estate so you should try to claim it.
It is always a good idea to contact an attorney and, yes, legal aid does many times offer free help if the person is qualified for this service but it would not hurt to find your mother's name on one of these lists so you know what you are talking about when you ask for legal aid assistance as these sites give "instant" responses so you would know the name of the agency that may be holding this money, as well as the amount of money being held (could only be a few dollars or a large sum), and what documentation will be necessary to try and claim these funds.
These are easy to navigate sites and the response will be instant so why not try one of these before going to an attorney?
You will probably need an attorney if these funds are considered part of your mother's estate and she did not leave a will with you as her sole beneficiary.
I would contact an attorney on this one. The Legal Aid Society provides free ones.
If the money was on your state's unclaimed money/property site, you may want to go to your local State Representative's office and talk to them about your ability to claim it.
In my state (PA) this service is "free" which means it was already paid for by my (and everyone's) tax dollars. Your state should have the same type of service.
I know from first hand experience:
1. If you are entitled, they will help you without a charge. The help....at least in my local office...was to fill out the paperwork and notarize it. I only had to pay postage.
2. They can give you information on free or low cost legal aide if there are legal questions that need answered.
Hope you are eligible and able to take care of getting the payout. Last time we filed for something it took about 6 weeks to hear back. Put a reminder on your calendar and if you don't get it by then, your State Rep who helped you can help again to find out where it is in the process.

I'm interested in knowing who that 'somebody' was. Was it someone who really had reason to know this, or was it hearsay? Are they trustworthy? Can you go back to them and ask them for some sort of documentation or evidence to back up their claim?
I ask because if it is difficult to secure a lawyer and go thru the whole rigmarole it would be a shame to go through that bother for nothing
