Turn a girl's cotton lace frill sock into a sweet little Christmas angel. A great way to use a mismatched sock for something useful.

Total Time: 20 minutes, drying time excluded

Yield: one Christmas angel

Supplies:

  • one girl's white cotton lace frill sock (the sock in the example was size 12½-3½UK)
  • white polystyrene ball with a diameter of 65mm
  • 1 or 2 brass scourers
  • pair of 10mm wiggle eyes
  • 30cm long white tinsel pipe cleaner
  • 2 large white poultry feathers
  • flesh and pink acrylic paint
  • Artline 210 Fineliner black pen
  • quick-drying craft glue (such as Bostik Clear)
  • needle and white nylon thread
  • white crochet thread
  • paintbrush
  • standard scissors

Steps:

  1. Cut off the sock's toe and 3/4 of the foot.
  2. Push the polystyrene ball into the heel of the sock, and sew the sides of the opening together at the foot end.
  3. Tie a piece of crochet thread tightly around the bottom of the ball and make a knot before cutting off any remaining thread. The piece of sock below the ball will be the angel's dress.
  4. Paint the sock-covered ball with the flesh paint, and allow to dry. Be careful not to mess any paint on the angel's dress.
  5. At the top of the ball, thread a double strand of nylon thread through the sock and tie to make a hanging loop.
  6. Cut small pieces from the brass scourers. Use Bostik to glue it to the sock-covered polystyrene ball to make the angel's hair. Be careful not to glue pieces of brass scourer over the hanging loop.
  7. Glue the wiggle eyes in place.
  8. Make the angel's crown: Bend the pipe cleaner to make a small circle, and twist each end of the pipe cleaner around the circle to make a neat crown. Glue the crown on to the angel's head.
  9. Use the black pen to draw a singing mouth, nostrils, and eyebrows, and paint rosy cheeks to complete the facial features.
  10. Glue the feathers in place to make her wings. Hang on a Christmas tree and enjoy!
