Dividing Hydrangeas?

I've read your useful advice and information regarding transplanting hydrangeas. My question is can they be cleaved/divided? I have an established hydrangea and I'd like to split it so one half can be transplanted. Can this be done? If so, do the same recommendations apply, ie. late fall? Thanks for any information.

Just dig your shovel down into the bush and snag a piece of root, pot and water and keep out of the sun for a few days. You can also bend a branch down to the ground, cover with soil and keep watered. It will grow roots. Next spring dig up and move to desired location. Good luck, Anne
