Dog Shedding After Using Peroxide to Remove Skunk Spray?

My Shepherd got skunk sprayed and I used the peroxide solution. I rinsed it off 2 days later now he is shedding very badly. Is it because of the peroxide?

my first instinct is that peroxide is way too strong for a dog's fur, but I went ahead and googled it and found no obvious indiciae that stron H2O2 made a dog shed. I found this formula for the deskunk solution which contains H2O2 and baking soda, all which sound harsh to me www.preventivevet.com/.../deskunk-your-dog-hold-the-tomato...

In conclusion, i see no reason why H2o2 (unless you used over 3% solution and stronger than th recommended recipe) should have caused that. Coudl it also be stress? Skunk spraying can be a stressful event and dogs will sometimes lose hair over an event like that

best talk to the vet

The peroxide solution that's on the internet, that uses 3% peroxide, baking soda and dish soap, (if that's what you used) is suppose to be washed right off. Leaving it on for a couple of days
may have chemically burned his fur and or skin, which could be why he's shedding.

It's sort of like us using a mild hair coloring, like a *temporary hair color*, (it's still got a low percentage peroxide in it) and if we left that on, our hair would break off or fall out, which is why we only leave it on the hair for only 15- 20 minutes.

If his skin is peeling, please call your vet.

If his skin is perfectly fine, he may only lose his hair.

I would ask the vet. It may be a little reaction from the caustic skunk spray. The vet will have the best solution.

Prayers for the pup and you!

It probably irritated his skin. You can try coconut oil.
