Donating Fabric to Charity?

I live in Rhode Island and have hundreds of pounds of fabric in perfect condition. My mother collected it for the last 50 years. The pieces are at least a yard and up to 30. There are all types, mostly cotton. Any ideas of who could use it? They would need to pick it up in Cranston RI. I don't want it to go to waste. Thank you.

I have actually seen several people on this website asking about how to get fabric donated to a sewing club they had wanted to start. If I see the post again I will let her know. Alternatively, you might consider putting a couple ads on Ebay or on craigslist, there are also local buy and sell groups on Facebook. If you go on Facebook and search for a group according to your area that you live in and search for a local yard sale or marketplace group. You would likely have luck selling it at any of the above places. My mom is the same way and she moved out of State and left me with boxes and boxes of fabric that I had no Idea what to do with. If your not interested in selling it because you would rather it be gone and out of the way as it may take some time sitting there to liquidate it all.

If you would rather get rid of it more quickly, I would suggest joining your local Freecycle group. Freecycle is a program in nearly every State that people in the same community join and you can post things you no longer want and are giving away and you can also post things you might need so if someone has it they know who to give it to. And It is all free. Im in South Carolina otherwise my mom would be telling me to come get it off your hands! If you find you do want to sell any of it I know my mom would buy some from you if you sent some pictures and she would of course pay for shipping. Best of Luck!

Normally any Activity Director would take some of it and use it for projects. I would love having some but I am in Virginia. Guess we could do postage if you are interested instead of you just throwing it out.

If it is quite that much I would ebay it. Could really be worth your time and effort.

Step 5
Also if some one will pick it up, a volunteer will usually do this.

Step 6
We ask $1.00 a yard, all profit goes to local churches to help the needy.

Step 7
Thank you for donating your fabric, I am sure your mother would want that.

You can contact local schools in your area specifically the art department or home economics, or after school programs if they want to use the fabric and you would be happy to donate to them.

But I am sure there are lots of people who would love the donation to charity. You can call local charities as well and ask. But if you do not want to call posting ads online can work too..

Since you have so much fabric perhaps it would be more beneficial to give to more than one place as any one of the suggested places may not have room to display or store that much at one time.

There seems to be several places accepting fabrics in Cranston, RI but I would suggest you call each one before scheduling a pick-up just to be sure they can put it to good use immediately.

Check you local Rotary Club or other women's organizations: they often collect fabric to make quilts for those in need.

There are blankets and quilts made with these exact types of fabric pieces. They would be great to make items for the homeless in your area. Run an ad on Craigslist and people will come out of the woodwork. If you have any yarn I could use all I can get. We make scarves for the homeless.
