Donut Coasters - two donut shaped coastersI made these for a friend who loves donuts so much, she collects donut shaped items. They're very easy to make, using just cork board, felt, and embroidery string. They look cute on the table, but do cause a donut craving. Be careful! ;)

Total Time: 1 hour

Yield: 2 coasters

Supplies:

Donut Coasters - supplies
 

Steps:

  1. Take a very large mug and trace it onto the cork board.
  2. Donut Coasters - trace around a large mug onto the cork board
     
  3. Cut the circle out to make the donut base.
  4. Donut Coasters - cut out the circle to make the base
     
  5. To make a donut hole, place a large marker in the middle of the circle and trace it.
  6. Donut Coasters - trace around a large marker placed in the center to make the hole

  7. Use your knife to cut out the donut hole.
  8. Donut Coasters - use your knife to cut out the hole
     
  9. To make the icing, place the donut on top of a piece of felt and trace around it.
  10. Donut Coasters - place donut on a piece of felt and trace around it
     
  11. Cut out the circle, then place the donut on top of the felt circle again. Trace the hole onto it.
  12. Donut Coasters - cut out the circle and then trace the hole
     
  13. Fold the piece of felt and cut around the circle you just drew. You want this icing hole to be bigger than the donut hole.
  14. Donut Coasters - fold the felt circle in half and cut out around the circle making it slightly larger

  15. Cut some large squiggly waves out from around the felt to make it look more like splotchy icing.
  16. Donut Coasters - cut squiggly around the outside of the circle to make the frosting
     
  17. Repeat this whole process again using white felt to make a second donut.
  18. Donut Coasters - make a second donut using white felt
     
  19. To make sprinkles, thread a needle with some embroidery string and knot the end.
  20. Donut Coasters - thread a needle with embroidery floss
     
  21. Go around the felt, sewing in little dashes to mimic pieces of icing sprinkles.
  22. Donut Coasters - sew around the felt making little dashes for the sprinkles

  23. Repeat with different colours of string.
  24. Donut Coasters - different color and sized dashes for sprinkles
     
  25. Add some hot glue to the back side of the felt.
  26. Donut Coasters - apply hot glue to the back side of the felt
     
  27. Affix the felt to the donut and hold in place, smoothing out any bumps.
  28. Donut Coasters - glue the felt to the donut, smoothing out wrinkles
     
  29. Place your cups on top. Enjoy!
  30. Donut Coasters - ready to use
