Eight-Pointed Star Thread Button

Silver Answer Medal for All Time! 440 Answers

The completed Eight-Pointed Star Thread ButtonAll you need to make this button is a shampoo bottle cap or just a piece of hard plastic, string, and a piece of wire. I used wire from a damaged transformer. As you can see, it will cost you almost nothing, but you will get this very original button.

The use of thread to make this button is a bit like like how Death's Head buttons are made. I found out about the Death's Head buttons when I had already made my eight-pointed star button. The Death's Head buttons were used in the 18-19th century. A wooden, or bone, or horn round mold was wrapped with colorful thread in a cross or X design. The buttons received this name most likely because of cross design. This design was associated with the crossed bones under the skull. My button is wrapped in design with more intersections.

Total Time: 25 Minutes

Yield: Shank button about 1 inch

Supplies:

Supplies for making an eight-pointed star thread button.

Steps:

  1. Cut two 0.7-inch squares from the shampoo bottle cap.
  2. Cutting pieces of plastic from a bottle.

  3. Mark out the middle of the sides and corners as in the photo. Make an eight-pointed star out of two squares. To prevent the squares from moving, fix them with double-sided adhesive tape. The mold for this button is ready.
  4. Two square pieces of plastic.

Combining the plastic squares to make a star.

  5. Fold the wire in the middle and form a loop as in the photo.
  6. A bent loop of wire.

  7. Hold the end of the thread to the back of the mold and start winding the thread all time passing the four points of the star (see photos). Rotate and wrap the thread. Make sure that the threads are sitting neatly next to one another, not overlapping, keep tension. Make several rounds.
  8. Wrapping thread around the star shape.

  9. Attach the curved wire at the back and continue wrapping in the same way. The thread will hold the wire firmly.
  10. Wrapping thread around the star shape.

  11. When the whole surface of the mold is covered, sew the middle of the button at the back to anchor the wraps. Cut off the thread and hide the end.
  12. Wrapping thread around the star shape.

  13. Use several drops of fabric glue to anchor the final wraps at the front. The eight-pointed star shank button is ready.
  14. Wrapping thread around the star shape.
