Encyclopedia Britannica 1768?

A collection of Encyclopedia Britannica books.I got these books for free by a friend and I wanted to know how much these books are worth. It has a whole set with the world atlas and the junior encyclopedia. Also how old would these be and how could I find out?

In the front of the books should be a page with printer's info that usually has the copywrite date, edition number and the printer company name. The marking with 1768 is when Encyclopedia Britannica was first published. It was a 3-volume set with a reddish-brown cover. I looked for your cream cover edition, and it is probably no older than mid 1960's.

There is a listing on ebay that looks similar to yours that has an asking price of $129.99.... listing # 353245035558. Even a complete set in perfect condition of your edition isn't worth much. Encyclopedias in general, have a low value until they are at least 100 years old.

There are certain editions of Encyclopedia Britannica that are still selling for for $1,000 - $5,000; this is generally the 15th Edition (published after 1973).
Your set is the revised 14th Edition and your publishing date will be between 1933-1973 and have 24 volumes.
The white cover is not leather although some sellers state that it is.

Condition is usually just stated as good or some will state problems and show pictures. True condition is in the eye of the beholder but it's always best to show lots of pictures and definitely show pictures of flaws.
Some sellers state this is a 'rare' edition but that is not true as these sets can be found in abundance all over the internet.
Although not rare the 14th edition is still popular but books are very slow selling and the present economy situation has not helped. Many sellers list books (of all kinds) and some sell within a few months but most are listed for years (fact). many never sell.

eBay is the largest book selling site next to Amazon so that is a good place to start as more encyclopedias are listed on eBay than Amazon.
This link has eBay sets listed for sale so you can check out what sellers are asking for this edition and maybe get some ideas on how to list your set. You can place a 'watch' on any listing to see if it sells.

Asking prices are not value prices as only a sold item can show what someone was willing to pay for that item.

Here is the link to eBay's sold listings so you can see what someone actually paid for a set similar to yours zzzzz9this would generally be considered 'current value'.
The sold prices range between $40 - $250 plus shipping (media mail).

If you plan to list your set for sale I would suggest you list it on sites like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Ioffer, offerup, letgo and start your price at $200 (or more) (if they are in good condition) and offer local pick up or shipping with best offer considered.
Leave the set posted for several months and if you do not receive any offers you can lower your price and wait again.
You can list your set on several sites but be sure to have a lot of pictures.

Here is a link to Abe's books so you can see what a true book store has for sale (and high prices) - how often do they sell? Anybody's guess - similar to Amazon's listings.

Your children's book set is a completely different category so you need to post that as another question and show pictures and condition.

On Amazon, they have a hardcover in brown or red which is used and has 24 volumes in the set they are asking $1249.97 for the set of books.

I have found another set that is the same as yours and the asking price for this set is 550 euros. They do have a few sets that are in prime condition that they are asking 600 euros for the set of books.

On eBay, they are listing the books for $150. This is the higher end of the listing. The listing for these books start at $25 and goes up to $150.

These books sell for different prices depending on where you want to buy them. To find out when they were published look on the first page of the book. This gives you the information you need about the book and when it was published.

Can you take a picture of that paper and show it to us? I would also suggest sending the copyright page, which should have the publishing date on it. I would be very surprised if those books are almost 200 years old as they look relatively modern.

I would love to see a picture of this paper and a picture of your title page which shows the printing date because I feel sure the paper belonged with another book and not with this set.
It's for sure that Britannica did not produce/publish white covers/binders that long ago and the first sets consisted of 3 books and then went to 10 volumes for several years.
It would be nice if your paper was authentic for this set but it's possible someone just found the paper and slapped in a near by book(?).
