Feces Caught in Dog's Fur?

I have a 17 year old Collie cross and when he has a poo it sticks to the fur around his bum. When we try to bathe him, wash him, or trim him he has started snapping at us, so we are unable to do it and he really stinks. The house is starting to smell as well. I am at a loss as to what to do.

We used to use baby wipes on the dog before she came into the house. Have the groomer shave the butt area as well.

If you have a regular vet, call the vet and explain the situation to him or her. Ask if they can call in a prescription or have you come pick up an anti-anxiety or sedative to give him prior to bathing him. We often fill prescriptions where I work for dogs, usually the lowest dose does it (based on the dogs size of course).

However, if you go this route, make sure you have help when bathing him as some dogs may even get sleeping and you can't have their head drooping while bathing them. Your vet would be able to advise you further.

Sounds like this may have just started happening in the last few days/weeks and considering the age of your dog, I think it would be best to discuss it with your vet as there may be something different going on with his health. If you know his health is not a problem then maybe a phone call to the vet and go from there.

Snapping could become an even bigger problem. The pet stores sell several types of anti-stress/calming meds for dogs and they usually work very well. Maybe you could try giving him some of this before attempting to clean his bottom.
Where/how do you normally give him a bath? It seems a bath tub or shower may be used and perhaps two people could try working this out. I know this cannot be done everyday but maybe you could ease him into letting you clean him. There is also a product (I think it is called "the stuff") that I've heard of that you spray on that makes it easier to clean their bottom.
Here is a web site that offers some suggestions:

Most likely you will need a veterinarian intervention. We have a long hair cat to whom this happens to a lot and we have to take her in to get her anal area shaved

the other thing we've been told is that when her stools are loose this happens more, so watch the diet.

You should change your dog's diet so that he gets more solid poop. And the vet to shave the area

Thank you for this old post! Yes, I noticed that our collie mix has a tail full of dried poop today. Tried to cut it out at a pet shampoo station. The tail hair is very long. I did not want to be cruel and rake it out. Got a groomer appointment first thing in the morning. Thank goodness for our dog groomers!
