Floating Ink Ghost Race

This is a fun racing game you can make with markers, water, a plate and straws. Objects drawn in dry erase markers can float on water when done properly, and it makes for an awesome race. Just blow at your drawings with straws and watch them speed across your water-filled plate. I've added instructions for a version using foil in lieu of a plate.

This works best with a pretty new Expo dry erase marker. I tried an older off-brand one and the drawings struggled to lift off as nicely.

Total Time: 10 minutes

Yield: 1 racing game

  1. Draw your ghosts straight onto the plate in a very think layer of ink.
  2. Gently pour water around the ghost, not directly on top as that will break the ink.
  3. The ghosts will start lifting off to float on the water. Jiggle the plate a bit.
  4. Use your straws to blow at the ghosts to race them around.
  5. To use heavy duty foil instead of a plate, fold all 4 edges of the foil up a few times to create walls to hold the water in.
  6. Draw your objects straight on the foil in your dry erase marker. Add water for lift off! I had better results with the dinner plate, but it does work with foil, too. Have fun experimenting!
