My school sells the computers they are getting rid of when they upgrade every few years.
you can contact Best Buy - they recycle old electronics, old computers, and even old monitors. You can also of course go on craigslist free section (look for ads with 'curb alert' and search for 'computers')
it's not as hard as it once was to find a free computer - new models come out frequently, you can't get rid of old monitors that still work but are clunky, and the value depreciates a lot, so it is easy to do if you do the legwork
