Free Laptop for a Disabled College Student?

I am in desperate need of help and any assistance available. I have been living at a battered womens shelter with my three children. I have a very old laptop and have been using it for the past month with this new job. The only problem is that it's missing 3 keys and is extremely slow. I have patience, but my school requires deadlines and emails. It is very demanding and I can no longer use that laptop. With this new course, one of the requirements was for me to have my own computer, but this one has gone out of commission. Is there a place that will donate used or refurbished laptops? I am also disabled and I beg of you to please help me out. I don't know where else to go or ask. I pray you will be able to help and if not then God bless you and I would greatly appreciate it if you could refer me to someone that can.

I do have all necessary documents to prove my case above.

Normally, if you are disabled and you are attending a Univeristy, they will help with a laptop if you have the necessary paperwork to supply people.

You can also try posting on Freecycle to see if anyone has one they can donate to you. Present your case on the site and more than likely there are many people in your area that have a few laying around their home.

You can also check with your social worker and see if they have any way to help you out in getting a used one for you.

Check out this website it offers disability grants for laptop. You might be able to qualify for one here: www.disability-grants.org/grant-for-a-laptop.html

Go to the financial aid office of your university. They should be able to help.

Reading your story it does appear that you would be eligible for a free computer but please bear in mind that programs like this do not usually make things happen "overnight" so there may be a short waiting period.

  • Also, there are a lot of programs listed on the Internet for "free computers for students" but some of these programs are for high school students only and others are for college students as well. Always read the intro for help so you will not be wasting your time if you are not in their type of program.
  • There are also a lot of programs where students can purchase a very good computer for a small amount of money. Some of these sites also have Internet service for about $10 per month and that is a really good deal (it is usually Sprint network).
  • Here is a site that has great deals on refurbished computers (if you are eligible).
  • Here is another site that offers free help.
  • It is usually recommended that you contact your local vocational rehabilitation office as they usually have information on problems like this.

If you visit the student center and speak to a counselor. They should have a list of accommodations you can speak to better assist you. They are very helpful. :)

In wanting a free anything i would always check the FOR FREE craigslist section or create a WANTED in Free section because you just never know. I know you have a better chance of getting a free desktop computer than a laptop but still.

I found some good links for this, which provide laptops either to students or low income people or disabled people:

bizfluent.com/disabled-can-t-afford-home-computers...

Computer Recycling Center (CRC) provides refurbished computers to homebound disabled people by working in tandem with city agencies. Volunteers at CRC work to link people in need with the equipment, which is attained by donations from members of the community. CRC is located in northern California, but it does ship equipment--shipping charges may apply, but there are limited waivers for shipping. Visit the organization's website for more information on how to qualify and become an applicant.

other ideas available at the site listed above.

more ideas:

1. Computer Technology Assistance Corps (CTAC) ctac-nh.org/.../12
CTAC accepts donations of old computers, wipes out the data, and refurbishes them and provides them to families receiving government or state assistance, and to registered nonprofits with a need.

Computers With Causes www.computerswithcauses.org/application.htm
is a national program providing computers to low-income families or to eligible groups.

On It Foundation theonitfoundation.org/
This group seems to offer computers to k - 12 students but might work with you.

here's more info from this site: "The rise of free laptops and computers for low income families, students, disabled people and children has become widespread across many organizations. Some of these organizations are national while some of these are also at the state level. " www.lowincomefinancialhelp.com/.../

best of luck!
