Gooey Buns Recipe

I am looking for a recipe from the 1950s or 60s. They were called "Gooey Buns" and contained cubes of ham, hard boiled eggs, cheese (Velveeta?) and some other ingredients? Then the mixture was placed in hot dog buns, wrapped in foil and baked in the oven until melted and gooey. I loved these when I was a child and my Mom made them often. Thanks for the help!

Found this recipe, might be what you are looking for

Gooey Buns

Cheap, simple salad for sandwiches. I don't ever remember eating it on buns, but for some reason we always call it gooey buns? Sometimes I run the pickles through the food processor, other times I just chop it myself. I think that this recipe came from my Grandma, but I'm not sure The serving size is just a guess.
Ingredients

* 1 lb ham
* 2 pickles (or 1/2 cup relish)
* 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
* 1/2-3/4 cup mayonnaise
* 2 tablespoons mustard

Directions

Dice ham and pickles.

Mix all ingredients well, adjusting the amount of mayo to your taste. If desired, chill to allow flavors to meld. Serve on bread or buns - great for brown bags / picnics.

Use chopped up chip chop ham instead. Put all of ingredients on hamburger buns. Wrap each sandwich in foil and bake at 350 for 20 minutes. This was my grandma's Special sandwich recipe..

This one sounds like the one I used to make! Maybe a little less mustard, but definately the same ingredients, all ground together, put in small hamburger buns, wrapped in foil, baked unto hot and served.

This is the recipe I recall from my childhood (in the 60's). It was a card club favorite.

Goey Louies
1-1/2 lb. Isaly's chip-chopped ham, diced

Advertisement

1 lb. white cheddar cheese, cubed (small)
4 hard boiled eggs, diced
2 med. onions, very finely diced
1/2 bottle chili sauce
1 c mayonanaise (NOT Miracle Whip)

Mix together all ingredients. Place on buns (I use an ice cream scoop for equal measures). Wrap individually in foil and bake at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
Note: I prefer to "render" the chipped ham first in a large pot to get rid of extra grease. Drain, let cool, then proceed with recipe.

Yields approx. 20 sandwiches

Enjoy! :)

Funny but this time of year my mom would make a mixture. Im gonna experiment with it to see if I can replicate it.

She used -
Cubed velveeta
Diced hard boiled egg
A little diced onion
A little diced green pepper
Canned milk
A little ketchup

Then it was put on hot dog rolls and broiled in the oven until melted. They were amazing!

My mother had a recipe she called "Bun Filling". It consisted of

Cubed ham steak..about 1/3 cup
Cubed sharp cheddar..about 1/2 a standard brick
2-3 hard boiled eggs, chopped
1/2 cup green salad olives
3 Tbsp mayo
1/2 cup chili sauce
A couple of squirts of yellow mustard
Onion salt to taste

Spoon filling into a hot dog bun, wrap in foil, and bake at 400 degrees for 12 minutes. A favorite of mine when I was a kid, and still good!
