Home Remedies For Ear Ache

I've had this earache for a week and it hurts. I can't hear very much and it hurts when I burp. There was some bleeding, but that stopped. It makes my head hurt and I don't know how to make it go away. Any home remedies?

The nurse practitioner in our office used to recommend using a warm egg (soft boiled) wrapped in a wash cloth placed at the opening of the ear. She said since it was curved it kind of conformed to the ear. Me, personally, I would seek medical attention. You might have an infection that requires antibiotics. (10/07/2008)

I too suffer a lot from earaches, most of them to do with allergies. I have found that good old Unkers salve is a real help. Do not put it in the ear canal, but just on the outer inside ear and also on the outside of the ear by the cheek. I put it on at night and in the morning a lot of the ear gunk has been drawn out. Best of luck when all else fails, go see a ENT. Blessings.

If there is blood coming out of your ear, you have most likely ruptured the eardrum and need to seek medical help "NOW". However, I have used an old, old remedy from a "Frannie Farmer's Help Book" circa 1900, for many years with great success. Warm a small amount of sweet oil, (such as Baby oil or even Olive oil will do), then dip a cotton ball into the hot oil. Immediately sprinkle with ground pepper, fold the cotton ball to enclose the pepper and place in the offending ear. Ache stops in a couple of minutes. (10/08/2008)

Bleeding indicates a punctured eardrum. Been there, done that. If for some reason you can`t get to a doctor, I have in the past used Hydrogen Peroxide. I used an eye dropper and filled the ear canal with Hydrogen Peroxide. It will bubble like crazy, but will flush out the ear canal. Get to a doctor is my #1 advice, though. (10/09/2008)

Yes, get to a doctor. If this happens again, when you first feel pain you can put Olive oil or Melaleuca oil in your ear and cover with a warm cloth. My pediatrician used to say to do this and then put the child on your chest and hum while you rocked the child. The child was soothed, the ear was doctored with the oil, the pressure and warmth from holding the child close to you and the humming tended to soothe the ear also. It's the vibration that helps.

I know it sounds "kooky", but it always helped my children until I could get them over the ear infection. Some ear aches are temporary pain from allergies, but many need an antibiotic, and your situation sounds like its gotten serious enough to need a doctor. (10/09/2008)

Under normal conditions, a rupture of the eardrum will heal itself. Since infection is present (blood), your tympanic membrane (eardrum) will not heal until the infection is treated and gone. The perforation means there is access to the middle ear. A chronic infection here can eat away at the bones of the ear and cause permanent hearing loss. Do not put anything in the ear to cause the infection to get worse. See an ENT (ear, nose, throat specialist) now. You do not want to take chances with your hearing. (10/09/2008)

My family of over 150 people rely on this:

  • 1 Tbsp Boric acid
  • 1/8th C Hydrogen Peroxide
  • 1/8th C warm water

Mix well, put few drops in ear covered with a cotton ball. Keep mixture in a sealed container and it will last for a month. Call a doctor, please.
