Home Remedies for Gout

Does anyone have a cheap remedy for gout? My husband is leery of using prescriptions because my grandfather has had kidney problems because of his prescribed medications. Any affordable natural recommendations would make our lives a lot happier! Thanks!

I had one bout with gout and I asked my kidney doctor about it. He said I probably got dehydrated enough that the percentage of uric acid brought on the gout; it's important to drink enough water and remember, tea, coffee and soft drinks have caffeine which is dehydrating. Here are some things I collected from the internet which might be useful:

I do not have sciatica but do have reoccurring back problems from a nasty fall that chipped and cracked 2 vertebrae and damaged a disk. The herb of choice for me is Valerian root. Get mine at Wal-Mart. Nature Resources, do not get the Spring hill brand to me it is worthless. Worked as well as the meds in the doctor's prescription.

Regarding the thread on back pain, sciatica, etc. May I comment that emu oil is noted for its pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be an effective topical treatment for many such conditions, and has wonderful synergy with the appropriate herbal infusions and essential oils. A bonus is that it penetrates deeply, carrying the benefits of any other ingredients down into the affected tissue.

For pain: DL-Phenylalanine - an amino acid that "interferes" with the pain receptors to the brain. Check with your local health food store.
If you think the area may be a bit swollen/inflamed, try bromelain. You must take bromelain on an empty stomach. Taken with food it is a digestive enzyme.

Let us know how it works for you! Several years ago, I gave a friend bromelain as part of a treatment for a tooth extraction. (He was expecting the usual swollen and painful jaw.) Not only did he *not* have swelling and pain. It also cured him of a nasty ganglion he'd had on his hand for over a year!

Bromelain is actually an enzyme from pineapple, when taken with food, it acts as a digestive enzyme. When taken on an empty stomach, it reduces swelling and inflammation. Useful for sports injuries, arthritis, etc.

Buy cherry juice. The brand I used to buy for my kids was The "Juicy Juice " brand which came in a can and was 100 percent cherry juice. Good brand and can get in almost in any supermarket. Cathy from MA (08/04/2008)

When my husband was living, he was told to eat Queen Anne Cherries. That was the only ones that helped. (08/06/2008)

For gout, my daughter takes Allopurinal tablets. They cost about a penny each. Basically they are baking soda in a capsule. Cheap enough, or make your own. (gel caps are for sale at www.sanfransiscoherb&spice company.com). (08/21/2008)
