I always had a hard time finding a litter box that was deep enough for my cats. They kicked loads of litter out the side with traditional boxes. Then I tried a covered box and it just made them stinky when they came out. So I made my own litter box.

By cutting the entance so big and so low, you're still allowing litter to be kicked out of the box. I suggest that you don't cut a hole at all.
I do the same thing ! No need to cut hole..cats can jump
That's what I do too. Easy to clean and my cat jumps in and I think less litter gets out.
I had to cut a hole... I have a 17 yr old that can't jump like that anymore
I used an old baby's bath as the sides are high and it worked well!

I love this idea. Mycat gets litter all over the place too. I have been thinking of different method.
Great tip. From my experience, I've learned to choose bins that are as smooth as possible on the inside to make cleanup a snap!
I do find this very helpful as it could solve a big litter box problem. One of my 4 cats has some very personnal sens of humor. One of his favourite games is to wait until one of his mates gets into the litter box. He then jumps on the top of the box. He lays there quietly, and from there he traps the other cat inside the litter box, hitting him with paws and claws on the head when it tries to get out of the box.
Many cat behavior experts recommend the one box for each cat, plus one. If your other cats are being bullied while using the litter box, they may resort to eliminating elsewhere, where there is or isnt a box. The one for each cat, plus one evens the playing ground somewhat. Cats do not like to be intimidated while eliminating.
We got a large tub for our cats too... but just one large, long one. It was the best thing we ever did. It helps keep the litter in, and it's easy to reach down and scoop. Even if you put a lid on it, it's easy to take off. I have a boy that is terrible about peeing while he's standing, so the high sides are a life-saver.

I have used a large tote and put a litter box inside. But now I use an outside storage box, it looks like white wicker, as the cat's bathroom as we call it. I lined the bottom with litter mats to catch the excessive litter for easy clean up. I can fit a container to hold the daily used litter until trash day plus a bag of litter for replenishing with the scoop and the litter box.
The lid opens from the top for daily scooping. This storage box is sold for storing outside items, cushions, chairs, pool items, etc. We bought a large one and my husband cut an opening into it. They come in different sizes and colors. It's an initial expensive but something that will be used for a long time.
