Homemade Tilex Shower Cleaner

Does anyone have the home made recipe for the store brand Tylex that is used to spray on the shower enclosure after each shower? We had it, but can't find it now.

Thanks.

Homemade Tilex Shower Cleaner

  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 1 squirt Dawn
  • 1/4 cup Jet Dry

Put all of the above in a large squirt bottle. Add water carefully so that you don't get alot of bubbles. Label as poison. (05/10/2007)

What is Jet Dry? Do we have it in Australia?

Editor's Note: Jet Dry is an dishwasher additive. It goes in during the rinse cycle to help dishes rinse and dry without streaks. I don't know if you have a product like it in Australia.

Tilex Formula = aqueous solution of 3% Sodium hypochlorite (i.e., household bleach); 1% sodium hydroxide (i.e., lye, oven or drain cleaner). The hydroxide cuts the soap scum (dissolution) and the bleach disinfects (oxidation).

Given that household bleach is ~6% and oven cleaner is ~5%, 1-pint of solution would be to take 8 oz. household bleach and add 3 oz. of oven cleaner, and 5 oz. of water. However, that just sounds too strong to me, so you may want to dilute as you see fit.

I guess I would first choose something healthier to have in the house instead.

However, you never need a lot of these chemicals to kill germs. And DON'T INHALE THAT.

Mr Science, your proportions are way off, if I understand the amount of chemical in the product. Although, thank you for pointing out what is the % of those chemicals in bleach and oven cleaner.

I don't think I would, But if I WERE mixing this:

Since you NEED SO LITTLE... I would mentally dilute each of those products to 1% first, and do math with quantities going up or down, or multiples of 1%.

since you want 96% water in your mixture, start there.

If you are making 24 oz of the stuff,

For the bleach --> .24 oz [1/100th of the whole] /6 [%, the prepared strength of bleach in the bleach bottle] x 3 [% desired strength for your mixture.]

= .12 oz Just over a 10th OF AND OUNCE of bleach at the regular 3% strength. Ask Google. its gotta be something like a 1/3 of teaspoon.

For the oven cleaner --> .24 oz [1/100th of the whole] /5 [prepared strength of lye in the can] gives you how much oven cleaner for 1% chemial

=.048 oz. LESS THAN HALF OF A 10th of an ounce of oven cleaner at the 3% strength.

So, I'd ask Google how many drop are in .048 oz. Really just a couple of drops.
