Homeschooling a Third Grade Child?

I am just starting my son in homeschool. He is a third grader. Can someone please tell me where to begin? I am very limited on money and can't afford a lot, but I also have no idea where to start. Can someone please help me? Thank you.

First, contact the board of education, they have to give you the curriculum.

You can also use the school library where he went to school. You may also be able to use the school gym, if it is not being used.

They should give you a book of what the rules or guidelines are when you notified the board of your intent to homeschool.

There also may be homeschool groups in your area where you meet with other parents and kids. He will need to socialize with others.

I home schooled my four kids until grade 6.

Homeschooling can be rewarding but also requires a lot of understanding and patience. I found that keeping a fairly tight schedule while still being "flexible" (especially in the first stages) was one of the biggest challenges.

  • This will be difficult if your son is not in favor of this maneuver as he may try to make it more difficult with every plan you make.
  • Be sure he has time (as he had in previous school years) to meet with his friends and hopefully they will not give him a "hard time" about being home-schooled.

  • You will have to listen carefully to find out if this is happening as that alone could cause serious problems with his learning time.
  • Hopefully he likes the computer as there are lots of programs/games aimed at teaching children (of all ages) various subjects.
  • Try to watch his progress in each subject so you can concentrate on his weak points as well as his better subjects.
  • Try not to think - 3rd grade only - as that could limit him in his best subjects and not give him a challenge to expand.
  • There will always be subjects for each grade that have to be covered but after that the field is wide open to homeschooling.
  • Attosa gave 2 excellent sites to visit as the more reading/researching you do the more prepared you will be.
  • I also found a state site for you to check out.
  • education.uslegal.com/.../
  • Here is a site that has a lot of information about how to get help with the expenses of homeschooling.

Anytime you need books (of any kind) as well as cd's and dvd's for curriculum or extra fun, eBay and other online sites have proved to be a good place to search.

Your school district can give you the curriculum. If you are a resident and pay school taxes you may be entitled to the books as well

You can contact your school district to inform them you are doing this and they can supply you with some materials. Here are some things to help:
