How Do I Find My Half Brother?

I have never met my real dad, but recently we have talked a little bit over Facebook and I found out that I have an older half brother named Joshua. I messaged my dad asking if there was any way to contact Joshua, but he said that he doesn't keep it touch with him and doesn't know anything about him. I don't know what to do since I'm just 14.

I assume he lives with his mother. If you know her name, you can find her on familytreenow.com, provided she has not opted out.

That is exciting to find out you have an older half brother. I suggested that you and your mom or the adult that you reside with (grandparent, etc.) do this work together as this could become a tense situation and I will hope and pray that you have the support of a loving adult to help you with this.

Do you know if the boy knows about you? It could be very stressful to him if you just so up into his life so be aware that he may not react well and be sure to have an adult help you through this process.

I am very good at finding people. You typically need at least 2 pieces of information, 3 is better, but if it is a less common last name, I can usually do it with two pieces and a whole lot of google and old newspaper research time. If you need to go to old newspapers, see if your historical center or library has these records where you can access them with a library card or admission price to the historical soceity. Some sites are free to the public, but some have to be accessed through a membership or library card.

Library is usually the easiest and free and librarians are always (at least mine is) SUPER helpful!

My secret is to write down as much as I know about the person and then start with a basic Google search putting "+" signs between the words...so if the person's name is Joshua and the boy has your dad's last name and say it is Smith, my first search would be Joshua Smith. If you dad's name is Tom Smith, I then would add in that name so using quotes so Joshua + "Tom Smith"

If that doesn't work, then I start adding things...like Joshua Tom Smith Son or Joshua Tom Smith Son (and then the name of the high school you think he may have gone to if you know the town where he resides.

Hopefully your father can give you details like the boy's mother's first and last name, the city and state where they reside, etc.

That's awesome you found out you have a half brother. That is one step closer, but is he able to provide last name too (assuming you do have it since it'd be your father's last name).

Is your half brother younger? If so he might not be on social media yet as you're 14. Maybe when he grows older you can communicate with him (legal age).
