100th Day of School Paper Plate Gumball Machines - alternative method is to make 100 dots using a bingo marker The 100th day of school is often celebrated with games, activities, art projects, costumes, and parties. I think it started because the 100th day is when Kindergarten students get around to counting to that number. Many classrooms have project stations, where students can complete different fun activities. Parents are also involved, helping their children dress up as 100 year olds or by helping them with theme related posters to share at school. One of the most enjoyable crafts that I have found for the occasion are these paper plate gumball machines. They are fairly simple to make and the final product is definitely eye-catching.

Total Time: 20 minutes

Supplies:

1 piece of cardstock (any color but white)
2 paper plates
1 piece of construction paper (any color but white)
1 piece of cardboard (same size as other papers)
2 small white index cards
permanent marker
5+ bingo markers
100 regular size pom poms
glue stick
stapler
scissors

Steps:

Cut the piece of cardboard into an elongated trapezoid shape. It helps to start cutting at the bottom of each side and go upward at angle. Now use the piece of cardboard to trace the same exact shape onto the piece of cardstock and construction paper. Cut them out.

My construction paper is green and cardstock is pink. You can choose your own colors. Glue the construction paper trapezoid on top of the cardboard one. Now staple a paper plate on top of each shape. It helps to move the plate down 4-5 inches for support. Now glue an index card on the trapezoid base of each. Write, "100 Gumballs for 100 days", or something to that effect.

Add glue all around the paper plate that is attached to the cardboard/construction paper base. Add 100 different color pom poms on the plate and allow to dry. The cardboard is needed because the pom poms will need the support. You can also use bingo dot markers and stamp 100 gumballs, as seen in the main photo.

This is an activity for preschool or early grade school students. It's just for fun and to help teach the concept of the number 100.
