How to Make Hanging Paper Pumpkins

Hanging Paper Pumpkins - two hanging paper pumpkinsI love these pumpkins because they have a lovely vintage feel to them. When hung, they cast pretty shadows and show many dimensions whilst gently spinning. This is a great craft for all ages for the entire autumn season.

Total Time: 45 minutes

Supplies:

  • construction paper (orange, green, brown)
  • ruler
  • pencil
  • scissors or paper cutter
  • binder clip
  • stapler
  • string
Hanging Paper Pumpkins - supplies
 

Steps:

  1. Mark the shorter side of your construction paper at every inch.
  2. Hanging Paper Pumpkins - make a mark every inch along the short side of the construction paper
     
  3. Cut into long 1" wide strips.
  4. Hanging Paper Pumpkins - cut into 1 inch wide strips
     
  5. Now trim them so you have two, 11" strips, two 9" strips, two 7" strips, and one 6" strip. (To make a smaller one, just follow this formula and subtract an inch or two.)

  7. Stack your strips so they are in this order: 11", 9", 7", 6", 7", 9", 11". The shortest one will be sandwiched in the middle. Make sure they're lined up at one end, then secure with binder clip.

  9. Staple all the strips together at the top.
  10. Hanging Paper Pumpkins - staple through all strips at the top
     
  11. Now line up the other end so it's flush, then staple it shut.

  13. Fold the green paper in half, then draw a leaf shape at the fold.

  15. Cut out then open up.

  17. Do the same for the stem on brown paper, but cut out a plain long rectangle.
  18. Hanging Paper Pumpkins - follow same process to cut a straight stem from brown paper
     
  19. Pinch the leaf onto the pumpkin, then pinch the stem on top.
  20. Hanging Paper Pumpkins - pinch the leaf on the top and then repeat with the stem
     
  21. Staple them into place vertically.

  23. Use your pencil to curl the leaves upward.
  24. Hanging Paper Pumpkins - use the pencil to curl the leaves up

  25. Pull your string through the loop of the stem. Hang your pumpkin.
  26. Hanging Paper Pumpkins - pull string through the loop of the stem and hang
