Felt Flower Brooch - finished felt flower brooch in fall colorsThis pretty brooch is easier to make than it looks. Cheap flimsy felt actually works better than the sturdier thicker felts because it will gather up more easily.

Wait until you have made the flower before choosing the button. Or you can choose something totally different for the centre such as something pretty, rescued from an old broken piece of jewellery.

Of course you can also use this flower for other accessories. It would look lovely on a hair clip, hair band, as a wrist corsage, on a handbag or purse, or to decorate a wrapped gift or a gift bag

Supplies:

  • felt in three colours
  • scissors
  • needle and strong thread
  • strong clear glue
  • brooch pin
  • narrow lace
  • embroidery floss
  • a large colourful button

Steps:

  1. Cut one rectangle of felt in each colour that is twice as long as it is wide. I used pieces 4 inches x 2 inches (10cm x 5cm).
  2. Felt Flower Brooch - cut three rectangles of felt, one in each color

  3. Cut 2 curved corners off each piece to make a semi circle.

  5. Cut each semi circle in half.

  7. On the curved edge of one of the pieces, make a backstitch to secure your thread.

  9. Continue to make a running stitch (gathering stitch) along this edge.

  11. Take a different coloured piece and continue the running stitch on this second piece.
  12. Felt Flower Brooch - continue the running stitch adding a second color

  13. Join all the pieces together in the same manner, alternating the colours as you go.
  14. Felt Flower Brooch - join all of the pieces together alternating colors as you go

  15. Gently and slowly pull the thread to gather the felt pieces into petals. Take your time. If you rush and pull too hard you might break the thread. Then secure the thread with a backstitch.
  16. Felt Flower Brooch - gently pull the thread to gather the petals and secure with a backstitch

  17. Cut an 8 inch (20cm) length of narrow lace. Half an inch (1.5cm) is about right for the width, but a wider lace will probably work just fine. Make a backstitch at one end.
  18. Felt Flower Brooch - make a backstitch in an 8 inch piece of 1/2 inch lace

  27. Choose a button and stitch it to the centre using all six strands of the embroidery floss. You may need to add a little glue too to stop it wobbling around.

  29. Cut a circle of felt to fit the back, but don't glue it in place yet.
