Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - lit with fairy lightsThis intriguing sculpture is made out of a bunch of equilateral triangles made from Popsicle sticks and hot glue. If you add LED lights or votives inside, it makes a fantastic lamp. The inspiration for this came from a set of polyhedral gamer's dice, which I think are so cool. Give this craft a try!

Total Time: 2 hours

Yield: 1 sculpture/lamp

Supplies:

  • 60 Popsicle sticks
  • hot glue gun with glue
  • scotch tape
  • tweezers
  • LED lights (optional)
Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - supplies

Steps:

  1. To make your first equilateral triangle, add a dot of hot glue to the end of 1 stick.
  2. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - add glue to the end of one stick

  3. Place another stick on top of that, then add a dab of glue on the top of the end of the new stick.
  4. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - add a second stick and place a drop of glue on the end of the new stick

  5. Place a third stick on top, then glue the other side under the first stick.
  6. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - add a third stick and glue the end under the first stick

  7. Hot glue dries fast, but you'll have enough time to adjust the sticks so they make a perfect triangle.
  8. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - quickly adjust to make a perfect triangle

  9. To continue making the triangles in identical sizes and angles, use the first one to guide you in making the second by laying it on top.
  10. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - use the first triangle as a guide and continue making more

  11. Make 20 of these equilateral triangles total.

  13. Take a pair of triangles and tape them together.

  15. Now do it again with another pair.
  16. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - repeat with a second triangle

  17. Now slide one more triangle in at the top and tape it in to the other two.
  18. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - slide one in from the top and tape to the other two

  19. Flip it over so the tape pieces are facing downwards, and gently lift it up so the 2 open ends meet. Tape them together.
  20. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - flip over and pull up so that the two open ends meet and tape them together

  21. Hot glue the very center of this dome formation, then hot glue the joints at the bottom.
  22. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - hot glue the center of the dome and hot glue the joints at the bottom

  23. Now tape together 3 triangles side by side.
  24. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - tape three triangles together side by side

  25. Lift the dome you created and start taping the 3-pieces below it. Essentially, you'll be making a belt of horizontal triangles right under it to make the torso of this sculpture. Glue the joints in place.
  26. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - lift the dome up and tape the three triangles to it then glue the joints

  27. Tape together another 3 and tape it on next to the last 3, then glue the joints.
  28. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - make another set of three then tape and glue to the last three

  29. Tape together 4 triangles. This will complete the torso.

  31. Add the 4 triangles segment onto the body, then glue the joints.
  32. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - add the 4 triangle segment and glue

  33. Now that you've worked your way around, you have the main first dome and the belt of triangles below that create the torso. All we need now is another dome like we made in part one!
  34. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - you now have the main first dome and the belt

  35. Repeat steps 7 to 11 to make the bottom dome.
  36. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - make a second dome using steps above

  37. Before you glue the bottom dome on for completion, take your tweezers and gently remove all the scotch tape from the insides.
  38. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - before glueing on the bottom dome use tweezers to remove tape

  39. Glue on the bottom dome.

  41. You now have a beautiful 20 sided sculpture.
  42. Popsicle Stick Geometric Sculpture - you now have a 20 sided structure

  43. I like placing mine on my light box. It shows off all the dimensions.

  45. You can also place an LED votive at the bottom.

  47. Stuffing it with LED fairy lights makes it look magical!
