Pretty piece.

Not every piece is marked.

If they are marked it is usually on or around the clasp. Sometimes you need a jeweler loupe or magnifying glass to see it.

There are metal marks (like 14K gold or 14 KRG (rolled gold which is plated). Silver marks can be the word Sterling, 925 or other numbers like Mexican silver is often marked 95.

There are also figurals for markings (some are for sterling, some for plated).

If you took a very clear photo of the back I may see something.

Any pawn shop or jewelry store should be able to test it for you for metal content.

My Treasure Hunt (they buy gold and silver) has a machine that they can put it into and it reads metal contents. Often they don't even have to do the scratch test to tell you what it is.

I am happy to help with a better photo!

OK...I am back. I have studied this marking. Is it a man and a child or a man and a woman? I know many French and British pieces use human figures in their markings but they are typically one person--a queen or a king for example--I have not seen any with a couple or a man and child.

Have you had the piece tested for metal? It looks to be either silver, silver plated, or pewter.

I suggest having a jeweler check it out for you. They may recognize the marking and they can tell you the metal.

Generally I can tell you this:

If it is pewter or silver plated, unless it is a famous maker, brooches like this sell for under $10 on eBay.

If it is silver--you will have to see which is more at the time--the scrap value or the retail value--which would be about $10-15 on eBay.

If it is gold, your best is scrap value (at least that has always been my experience).

Post back if you learn more. Meanwhile I will see if I can dig up anything else.

I dont think the adult and child is a hallmark. Hallmarks appear on every item made by that manufacturer. I think it is a design on this one piece.

Take it to a jeweler and you will at least find out what it is made of.

I do not believe this is a Hallmark stamp on the back of this piece. This is a stamp for another item or it was made just for this one. I am not really sure the medal that is in this and it is best if you go see a jeweler to find out what this is made of. You should find out what this is made of before you try to price this. An antique shop or auction house can also help out in identifying the marking on the back of this.
