Identifying a Rushton

A clown doll.I would just like to know more about this toy. It has the Rushton stamp under the chin but the fact that the hands, feet, and ears aren't rubber tells me there's an interesting story here. And I'm very curious to know if anyone knows what that story is. Possible age and any other details most welcomed. Just for my own curiosity.

The Rushton Company was an American company, started by Mary Rushton from Atlanta and that lasted from 1917 to 1983, being passed down as a family company. Her daughter Wight designed most of the dolls and stuffed animals.

Rushton made hand painted, rubber dolls and rubber faced animals from the 1950's until the 1960's. It was one of Rushton's most popular toy lines and consisted of many different toy stuffed Bunnies, monkeys, Rushton Santa, cats, ducks and other animals and figures with rubber faces.

Not all of their toys, and not all of the monkeys, had rubber arms and legs. I found RUSHTON STAR CREATION ORGAN GRINDER MONKEY RUBBER FACE www.worthpoint.com/.../rushton-star-creation-organ-grinder..., which only has a rubber face.

Your monkey is rare, but not the only one, made in the 1950s-1960s.

Thank you for going through all that effort to research and such. Its very kind. I think that this doll is a result of the face being reused in someones home for a handmade doll. Even the paint seems hand done. Because its from the same mold as the Chico monkeys and their eyes where painted differently. They also always had rubber extras with that particular face. Its still a fun piece.

I don't know if this gal is still around, but she has one of the best Rushton sites out there: rushtontoys.wordpress.com/.../

I personally do not think this is an original--meaning--I think the rubber face was from the 16 inch white monkey (monkey in a white outfit) i.etsystatic.com/.../il_570xN.2413350286_4l5t.jpg

and the Junk Yard Clown outfit melded together www.worthpoint.com/.../rushton-company-1970s-clown-rubber... I have been known to be wrong before. There are a variety of colors in the trim so don't be thrown off by the green.

It just does not look right to me, and as you say, the hands feet aren't rubber. Yes, there are some that weren't, but this is odd. I do not remember this combination with a monkey face.

Please post back if you get her! I am super curious!!

Thanks!

Im in agreement in it not being original Atleast in body. I think this was an interesting old sewing project at one point. Its definitely decades old but its not the original design or anything. I dont know why I felt I had seen it before but I may be misremembering. Its still a unique piece for the collection. They did a good job with it.

And I got it a while back. Its sitting on my pinball machine now.

If I learn any more, I will let you know! It is a neat piece even if it is a franken-piece. Thanks for sharing!

The head could have been taken from a Rushton doll and put on a different brand doll.

Im thinking the face was reused too.

I always turn to eBay to identify an item. Do a search by telling all you know about your doll and put on a good photograph .

You know, I tried that. But there was never a response sadly.

Yes, but thats not a Rushton and the thing is that with the particular mold of the face of the one in my pic is always paired with rubber hands, ears, and feet when its an actual Rushton. Im in the line of thinking the face was reused.

Hi I'm years late in seeing this but this is definitely an original Chico Rushton. His face and body is original. A toy collector I follow has a bunny with the same body print.

There's different variants of the original plushies. My buddy told me his bunny with the same body mold is part of a Rushton circus variant.
