I have had this puppy since the early to mid 80s. I remember it came in a card board shaped like a dog house with a red roof. It had little things written on the box like, "Will you take me home?", "Rescue me", etc. There were a bunch of different puppies to choose from and I think they had even come out with kittens?
The dog house box, was only as big as the puppy's head and the head was the only thing sticking out. I really want to say this was called a Recuse Pet, or Rescue Pup/puppy, that's what just really sticks out in my mind. But I can't find anything on that.
When I was little my mom washed and dried him on high heat killing the fur, his tag and his eyes (which she repainted on him for me). He is roughly 8 inches long. I remember going to the toy store (probably Children's Palace) seeing the display on the shelf and picking out this particular guy and reading all the sayings on the little dog house shaped box. My sister picked put one that was black and white with short ears. The only tag on him is under his left ear. Can some one please help me identify this guy? Thank you!! :)

Someone on a Facebook toy identification page found what this little guy was. Its a Hug-a-pup made by Marchon company in 1985. :D they made a bunch of different ones.

I did not have a chance to post an answer but I had identified that your pup was not a Pound Puppy and for all the reasons you state so I'm glad you made that so clear (although the resemblance and dog house are very close).
I have several "vintage" Pound Puppies and they all have the emblem and tags just as you state so that is a mystery cleared up and I hope you will one day find another pup like yours.
I forgot to mention that I had saved this link to a pup (like yours, I believe) listed on eBay.

These are Pound Puppies.They were made by Tonka.
Sorry its not a pound puppy. It doesnt have the tell tale pound puppy emblem on their rear end. Also its much smaller then the pound puppies released at the same time and the fabric is completely differently than what they used for them. Which didnt change until the mid 90s when they re-released them smaller and their heads werent the same size as their bodies.

Some held their value, some not. I even have a newsletter somewhere...I should find that and see if it held its value :)

A couple other things, my puppies tag is under his ear all the pound puppies and purries tags were on their rear end, even if they didnt have the pound puppy logo on their rump. Also the eyes on my puppy, (even though they were repainted by my mom) they are not flat like all the pound puppies they are rounded. I must have gotten the boxing mixed up with the pound puppies and purries but, I know for sure with out a doubt this puppy, is not a pound puppy. This was released about 1985 (I was in 1st grade and when the pound puppies were taking over). The pound puppies released then were big, around 20 long not 8 long and even the baby pound puppies were only about 6-7 long. None of them have the body to head ratio that this puppy has.
