Identifying a Tiny Bug?

Identifying a Tiny Bug - tiny bug on white tub surfaceDoes anyone know what kind of bug this is? And how to get rid of it? I keep finding them in the bathtub. They are very tiny and slow moving. I can not tell if they have wings. Here are some pictures. It was hard to get a picture since they are so little.

Looks like silverfish. They like water and paper.

Prevention is the best medicine! A dehumidifier helps, as does getting rid of paper and cardboard. There is a good natural, safe way to get rid of them described here:

It's not a silverfish although that was a good guess... it is a Springtail, I have them all over my door step. These are tiny little guys but harmless and very beneficial.

I have something that looks exactly like this but I think it is what's biting me... also, I found it in my bed. Any other ideas other than silverfish or does a silverfish bite?

This is NOT a silverfish. The tail is wrong and the insect is almost as small as a grain of sand. I have them in my bathtub. No one has identified them for me.

It seems like the bug is only about 1.5mm long. I just saw one that looks similar to the one pictured. I used two strong pairs of reading glasses to try to get a better look at it. It looks different to me from a silverfish, which I've seen much bigger than this bug.

My guess is that it's a tiny beetle. I think I heard there are more types of beetles than any other type of insect.

Silverfish do bite but their bites are usually more serious because they have a small amount of venom at least as adults.

Not a silverfish. But I have no idea I'm trying to figure it out myself I have some in my garage sometimes and sometimes they're on the floor but yes they are small as can be. I've never had them in my bed or on me or I've never been bitten by one. I just don't know what they are.

It is a silverfish. Wipe down the shower with a squeegee and keep fhe window open or fan running to get the moisture out.

Firebrat/silverfish. They love humidity so get rid of that as much as possible.

Certainly looks like silverfish and there are probably a lot more that you do not see.

  • Try to keep everything as dry as possible. Keep door open as much as possible, use fan and make sure there are no leaky faucets.

  • You can also purchase a small dehumidifier and it can be used in closets or any place that has excess moisture. Small dehumidifiers cost $40-$75 but still a good buy.
  • There are several ways to get rid of silverfish (removing excess moisture is top of the list) but you may need to treat more than just your bathroom.
  • You can use diatomaceous earth - DE - (food grade only) or Boric acid powder as natural insecticides that stick to the legs of silverfish and is then taken back to the nest. This will work for dusting hard to reach places. Scatter it on the floor of the bathroom, along outside the tub and around the commode.
  • You can also make your own traps:
  • Find some glass jars and then try putting tape around the outside with some water on the inside. The insect can climb in but cannot climb out. You can then drown the silverfish by adding a little dish soap to the water.

I will be a dissenting voice and say they look a bit like a German Cockroach to me.

I also thought these could be a German cockroach because they are so common and they like bathrooms but I copied the picture, cropped and enlarged it and although it is still very blurry, you can see the "stripes" across the neck/head that silverfish have and German roaches do not seem to have.

Also, German roaches have wings, although they rarely fly.
But, German Roach or silverfish just about the same solution would apply.
the only thing is, I hope it is not German roaches as they are dirty and more difficult to eradicate.
