I am looking for any information on a Lane cedar chest. I was lucky enough to have to this beautiful piece given to me. I have just found a love of antiques and collectibles. I am still very much researching and learning. I was wondering if any of you would be able to share your experience with me. I know this chest is a Lane. I haven't found any pictures in my search that match. I'm in the process of locating the serial number. Thank you so much in advance.
Finding serial numbers was extremely difficult for me. I live alone with my 3 year old daughter. I was not physically able to turn it upside down. However, I turned my flash on and took pictures of the bottom. I found numbers stamped on the bottom of the pull out drawer part. 1734 04 I think. I had to take multiple pics because I couldn't get my phone to zoom out enough. I could just barely get my hand holding my phone under. Here's the pics.

Lovely piece!! I have it pegged from the late 1970s or early 1980s, so vintage but not antique (antique is used to describe items approx 100 years old or older).
Since you have a child at home, I strongly suggest calling the company that now owns Lane and send them this photo and ask if they can confirm it was one of the recalled ones
They were recalled because the locking mechanism resulted in a number of deaths of small children who were trapped inside.
I am sorry you can't get all of the numbers...hopefully they can use just a photo to help you. The recall affects products made from 1977 thru 2015.

Thank you. Vintage describes it perfectly. It was given to me by an elderly gentleman who had to sell his home. It would make sense to me that the lock has not been updated. There were no young children in or around his home. I learned about the locks during my research.
I would call and ask the place that bought Lane to help you when you get the lock replacement.
If for some reason they can't help you, you could take a photo of the dates and the entire item (bright, clear photos) to a vintage dealer and tell them you want to see if you need to insure it (which I can almost guarantee you will not need a rider for it). But you can ask them to help you date and value it.
All of our local shops have very kind owners and IF THEY ARE NOT BUSY, they are always willing to answer questions. It is good business for them to be nice, because down the line you may come back and buy something or if you go with a friend, that person may come back to buy! It is good karma to help!

If you read the serial number backwards that gives the safe it was made. On newer chests you drop the last number. The older chests go for around $225 on eBay, provided the condition is good
I can't seem to make any sense of the numbers I found on the bottom. Like the numbers read backwards don't equal a valid month, day and year. 173404 is what I'm getting.
I know you are not looking to sell the item and only want some information about this piece. It is hard to find a lot of information about certain items online and the best place to get what you are looking for is from a dealer.
I'm just so curious about it. I love this piece so much. I consider myself so lucky it came my way for free. The carved wood columns on the front look so nice in my 1923 house I have worked so hard to restore. Do you mean going into a local antique or re-sale type store? I don't want them to think I can buy anything. Unfortunately, I don't have much monetary value to offer them.
