Is Our Dog a Pure Bred Belgian Malinois?

Please help. We want to know if our pup is a pure breed Belgian Malinois or a cross breed. His small face/head looks like a German Shepherd. I saw a Belgian Malinois (same age) and the head is large that's why I wondering and thinking that our pup is not a pure breed Mal.

He is already 5 months old at present, but he only weights 16lbs. Your answer is highly appreciated.:)Dog lying on ground chewing on leash.

Your dog looks like a Belgian Malinois; I am not sure. I have a Belgian Malinois. She is beautiful with a very dark face and mahogany coloring.

She is approximately 21" at the withers and weighs 44lbs.

My guess is yes he does look like a pure bred Malinois. I say this because my son, a police officer, has a K-9 of the same type. he just retired this past year.(the dog) They are a very intelligent breed. I would highly advise some sort of training, they learn so well. They are a thin dog also. I hope I've helped, you have a very nice looking dog.

Are you sure? The markings and tail arent right. Also, a 5month Malinois thats only 16# needs an emergency vet because something is badly wrong.

Id be really surprised if this is a Belgian Malinois.

I am having this same issue with our two babies that we rescued. Did you get an answer to your question on the breed? Both of our dogs look very similar to your dog, just curious if you got a definite answer. We are very tempted to get them DNA tested :)
The attached picture is our Mal or Mal mix Gunner.

Feel free to email me if you ever got an answer.

I believe your boy is a pure bred ..i had a roommate who bought a Mal from breeders and we knew the pups were pure bred. The pup they got was all tan in color with just a little shade of darker tan _not black - ears and snout..

Animals are like anything else born ..they are themselves unique .just because they don't "look" like the norm doesn't mean they aren't pure . " What matters most tho is that you love them

Just ask your vet to take a blood test of your dog then youll know for sure! Good luck!

My Mali at 9 months was 65 Lbs. Your dog should have black on the ears and black above the eyes that look like eye brows other than that cant tell you. If you love him that's all that counts.

The one thing Mals have that not many other dogs have is extremely large white strong teeth, And I pronounce very white and large.

I have a Bel Mal mixed with labrador. He does have the large white teeth....very sharp btw. He ia getting bigger but not as big as a labrador or a bel mal so that makes me think that he might have other genes. He has big white paw. And a white stain on his face. I might say that he has the apperance of aa Bel Mal but the personality of a labrador.

His name is Max btw and we loooooove him so much! Can someone give me an opinion?

I think yours looks a lot like my Malinios. Hes a runt at 56lbs and 1.5 years. He was from an abusive home and his ears dont stand 90% of the time because the cartilage in his ears were damaged.

Thats a Malinois shepherd mix. You can clearly see the shepherd coming through. Most Malinois are very slender. The shepherds are more stocky. Plus a Malinois head is usually thinner. Shepherds have a more broader head. I would guess a definitely shepherd in the mix.

The picture is a 6 month old Malinois female. Females are no doubt smaller in the breed most times.

I have a 3/4 Belgian Malinios mixed with 1/4 German Shepherd. He looks a lot like yours. He's full grown at 57 lbs. He's fast, agile, smart and loves to be by my side.

Is there a chance this might be a belgian malinois even if just a half bred ? based on her family tree her father was a pure bred belgian but her mother is just a mongrel or unknown mix

Looks like a Mal to me. I have one that looks a lot like that. They come in 12 accepted color patterns I think(not positive). Not all Mals have all black faces. The only people that will say that are the hold outs not wanting to accept the facts. Not all mals have black tipped ears either. To be honest I've seen mals from champion bloodlines that look nothing like what most people are calling Mals.
My best guess is you have a Mal/shepherd. Or he/she has a shepherd somewhere down the line. Full Mal or malshep are both awesome dogs. I found malshep to be easier to train, but mals hang on better to training once they learn it. Either way both are some of the faster dogs around if you work with them.

My baby boy is 7 yrs old, 70 lbs, & hes full blooded Malinois. When hes happy or excited, he chomps his teeth together quickly & loudly. When he plays fetch & he misses the ball; his chomp (teeth) can be heard from far away & upclose. Sounds similar to a wood bat hitting a ball. He enjoys biting & chewing on balls, stuffed toys, & bones daily. If bored he will bite on a stick or fallen branch. He rarely barks & he has a special high pitched bark when hes playful. Hes super protective of me. He will playfully gnaw on my wrist & then sniff it; he does this less as he gets older. As a puppy he did it daily, but he understands ouch, so he immediately stops when I say it. Hes never bitten me on purpose, but Ive cut my finger on his teeth playing fetch, a few times.
He will bark & growl at anyone trying to wake me. He never lets anyone sneak up on me, on walks; he will stand between me & a stranger to observe. He only becomes aggressive when Im nervous or scared, or if a stranger yells to me.
He sleeps & rests similar to cats, near my head, legs, chest, or lap. I wake up some times & hes curled around my pillow above my head... So I sleep with 2 pillows behind me. Hes comfy, sliding onto the back of the headrest on the couch, to sleep too.

Your pup looks like mine. I have a Malinois mix with a German Shep. His dad ( mal) is a 95lb. Malinois. Mom is a Czech Sable GSD. You can always get a DNA test from Vet.

That's a Malinoise X 1/2 gsd and will be twice the dog for it. You can tell if the eyes aren't solid black sometimes. Litters of pups from gsd and malinoise will have some with amber eyes. They will be less snake or long faced and with have wider heads. Your pup is beautiful. I have two sisters from the same litter and one looks like your pup and with amber eyes. Her features are all gsd and coloring of a Mal. The other is all Mal in looks color and eyes. Temperaments are the same and then again so different but they get along very well. The Mal looking sister is more prey drive driven and very sensitive to others feelings but will attack on command. She's always been that way. The gsd took a little more work and she is in her own world until I bark a command. Then she's 100% brilliant. Lots of hard work and headaches but I wouldn't trade em for the world. We also have a 135 pound 8 year old male gsd whose a graceful and fast as a ballerina in her prime. He has truly been a blessing. Especially helping to keep those two in line and helping with there training.

Looks a lot like mine and I am also trying to figure out the breed since she was a stray in West Texas. She has shorter coat and smaller paws than yours. 7 month - 40lb. Very bright and active but also loves her 2-4hr couch nap times. Mostly red/fawn and not a complete black mask. She looks like she wears thick eyeliner! Sable GSD saddle on her back. No black paws nor ears. I'm excited to see what she grows into!
