I have a John Deere F 910 front mower that I am trying to get running after it has been sitting for some time. The current problem is that the battery will crank one time with no sluggishness, the engine turns over, but doesn't start (carb is most likely clogged but that's another issue) and then the battery is completely dead. I can recharge it fully, but then will have the same result. I had the battery checked and it is good. Suggestions?

Please check your spark plugs, also recharging after it has sat a while may bring you back to the same issue. It has to have good power to make the other parts work!
I will check them, thanks. I think the engine not starting is at least partially due to the carb being clogged. I can start the engine with starter fluid for a few seconds but only get one shot at it because of the battery going COMPLETELY dead after 1 crank.
Do a complete maintenance tune up. Disconnect gas tank and clean it out. Also replace fuel pump and if you know how to remove the carburetor rebuild it with a rebuild kit you can order on line,"e-replacement " is a good place to start. And don't forget to change the fuel filter. Remove and replace oil and oil filter. Clean spark plugs and regap usually set at 30 thousand. You can check with a parts store they are usually happy to help. Good Luck.
You sound like you are having an alternator problem. If the battery dies after trying to start it just once then the alternator is not kicking in to charge the battery.
Sometimes an old battery will check out okay but not really be okay.
You need to find someone that can put your battery under pressure like running something to see if it holds a charge,
Sometimes a battery can have dead cells and cause problems when the alternator is not working properly to keep it charged.
Sears probably has a way to check the battery properly but most stores and even auto parts stores may not.
You're probably going to need to replace a lot of parts to get your mower running properly - especially filters and all new gas.
You may need to purchase a can of starting fluid to help clean out clogged fuel jets/carburetor.
