Keep Groceries Organized to Save Money

food in clear plastic binsTo keep my groceries organized so I know what I have and don't have, I have been doing the following:

I placed my groceries into plastic containers that I can pull out like drawers to check so nothing gets forgotten on the shelves. It also helps me to keep rotating my stock.

I designated certain rows or shelves in cabinets or even the freezer for distinct items, like the soup, vegetable, or canned fruit row, meat drawer in the freezer or the quick meal shelf.

I create a list of what potential meals I already have in the house and distinguish lunch or dinner meals so any of us can check it quickly know what's available and what we have to make a meal.

Example of list:
Lunch- peanut butter, tuna, soups, grilled cheese, ravioli, veggie burgers, ramen noodles, lunch meat/burritos.

Dinner- 6 hamburger patties, 8 drumsticks, 2 lbs. ground beef, turkey breast, pizza dough, and 2 lb. ham

This helps me to rotate my foods and not let something sit in the freezer while I continue to purchase meals.

This is a great idea. I organize things in my freezer like this. I even label shoe boxes and plastic drawers and only put that type of food inside. I have seafood, meat, veggies, etc.

I once helped my ex in-laws dig out from 45 years of hoarding. Because they couldn't find most of their food in the "food room", they would just buy more. When I discovered the floor again they had purchased but not used 118 cans of chili.
I hate to waste anything. And organization is very important to me as I don't have to search for things if they are where they are supposed to be.

This is SO cool! Thank you for this.
I have food allergies, so I am overwhelmed with myriad items but, like you I put items in plastic boxes. One thing that has been helpful in keeping cooking oils and such from seeping out from under the cap once opened and poured is to keep all my oils in 1 big rectangle plastic box that I line with old newspapers to catch and absorb the errant drips - - coconut oil (SO YUMMY) is notoriously insidious, and no matter how carefully I wipe the rim I still get oil on all over my fingers the next time I go to use it - - but it is not on my counters or the floor.

Ever had to clean a floor with leaked cooking oil on it; NO FUN. BTW - if one is only using one type/brand of oil in a huge container and then keeping it on the floor - get an oversized plastic bag and set it into that and then on the floor. same goes for smaller containers on the counter - those gallon-sized twist tie bags are perfect for this - - or a fold-lock sandwich bag if the bottle is really small. 'Big help...

Hi Donna,

What do you have your plastic drawers full of groceries sitting in? I tried to enlarge the photo but still could not tell.
