Keeping Pests Out of Holiday Decorations

Bronze Tip Medal for All Time! 64 Tips

Pinecones, acorns, and seedpods are great in holiday decor, but they sometimes house little insects or larvae. To eliminate the risk of uninvited guests at your holiday table, bake these things in a slow oven (200-250 degrees F) on a foil lined baking sheet for a couple of hours. Then glue, gild, and glitter the night away (odd stray idea - I bet you could dump them in a crock pot over nite instead of the oven).

If you put them in a ziplock bag and put them in the frezzer it will kill any critters :-)

I usually soak pine cones and other gathered craft items in a bleach and water solution. Sometimes the soak changes the colours on the natural item but most of the time it stays the same.

Never thought of slow-roasting, lol, good idea though!
