I'm looking for suggestions. I have a Kenmore 385.16231301 The machine and light turn on, when I press the petal you can hear the engine run, but the needle doesn't go up and down.

Is this a new machine to you or have you used it in the past and this happened when you just now started to sew?
If it has been unused for some time you may need to clean it as dust etc does gather while a machine is just 'sitting' or if it has not been cleaned in a long time.
If it is 'new' to you it most likely needs cleaning.
This may not be your problem right now but a machine that needs cleaning will continue to have different problems.

If you do not know how to clean it there are YouTube videos that will help you (even if the machine in the video is not the same as yours.)
There will also be cleaning tips in your manual.
I would suggest you check your bobbin to make sure it is in the right position for sewing.

If you need more help you can always join one or more of the sewing forums as these forums have qualified members who can answer your questions, know what questions to ask, and always seem eager to help solve everyone's problems.
This is the best of the sewing forums:

Sears may also be able to help. You can ask questions over the phone and sometimes they will give you suggestions or order any necessary parts.

Is this your sewing machine? www.searspartsdirect.com/.../kenmore-38516231301-electronic-sewing... If so, it said to check the drive belt maybe. If not, you can see the owner's manual, error codes.

My first guess is there is something wrong with the wiring from the foot pedal to the machine.

You could start cleaning(especially in the bobbin housing area ) this area gets a build up over time with treads, fabric, lint, etc , and applying a little sewing machine oil, for parts that have gotten a little wear to the parts. Also your belt may be loose and on it's way to breaking. - contact a local dealer/repair in your area.

Maybe you have a thread or lint jam. Check the bobbin winder.
Or maybe you need to check/tighten the clutch on the right side of your sewing machine,

or maybe drive belt is broken.
Cleaning and oiling can help, but use only fresh sewing machine oil and check in manual number of oil points.
The Manual you can find here (free): www.searspartsdirect.com/.../kenmore-38516231301-electronic-sewing...
