I recently purchased a home and won't be starting a kitchen remodel for 18-24 months. My biggest issue is the ridiculously dark cabinets and countertop. For the time being, does anyone have suggestions for cabinet and wall paint colors to brighten/neutralize the avocado green countertops and backsplash? I am not opposed to anything retro and love color. I actually would like to do accent pieces in bright orange. White cabinets would be OK, but I really like a two tone kitchen (top and bottom cabinets different colors). However, I'm concerned about the limited color choice, due to the green counter. I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Please excuse the mess, we're still in the process of unpacking and settling.

A pale yellow or very light mint green would really liven things up until you can get to that remodel.
wHAT i like to do under these circumstances, is consult with a colour wheel, and figure out which colours complement, contrast, etc with my chosen (or imposed-upon) colour.
IN this instance, I insterted the dark green into the colour wheel and you can see the result if you click on the buttons to show the complement, tertiary, etc colours

the Paletton wheel is nice because it provides options on lighter and darker shades as well
if you dont' want to go through the trouble of the above colour wheel, I would say that burgundy and blue are a good choice as they create a nice triad with the green
Have you thought of just painting the outside center panel of your cabinet doors until you can do your remodeling? You could take photos to the paint department of any of your larger stores (Lowes, Home Depo, etc) and check some of their color cards as well as ask for suggestions.
Seems like a nice lighter shade of green would lighten up the area and give you a better feel for what you would like in the future.
You could paint the upper cabinets white and then antique the with an antiquing medium for an off white look, paint lower cabinets chocolate brown or black, put a piece of stainless steel behind your stove , paint your backsplash burnt orange to pop.
I think if you'd just rid of the wall paper it would make a world of difference. Take it down and paint the walls a light color and maybe buy some bright cabinet hardware. Or better yet, spray paint the hardware. I wouldn't go with a lime green as someone else suggested; I'd think that would be too much green but that's just my opinion.
Personally, I would paint the cabinets white like you were thinking. I'd replace the wallpaper with different wallpaper- white, with small or a delicate floral pattern with a similar green (possibly a shade or two lighter). Maybe even an ivy pattern. Repaint the remaining parts of the wall with white like the cabinets. Any trim, paint with a similar green. Then you could still accent with orange like you considered.

I would whitewash the cabinets. Let some of the dark wood show thru, but it would add a lot of color and light and make the area seem bigger. I would also get rid of wall paper and use pain. Probably a white or maybe a pale yellow.
