A cedar chest by Lane.I have a Lane Hope Chest - SN 358240. It's in good condition, minus missing the inside ledge/shelf. Could you tell me how much this would be worth?

Your Lane Chest was made on April 28, 1953, because by the serial number you can determine the production date. You need to read the serial number BACKWARDS (from right to left).
I think the price is $150-200. Here is a similar chest, with inside ledge/shelf, but in poor condition for $ 199.99 www.ebay.com/.../303719437043

In some markets this waterfall (late art deco) style fetches more than most Lane Chests. I have seen them sell (not Asking price--but sell in the $500 range.

It depends on where you are. Even without the shelf, start high and take best price! This is a lovely piece! One of the few that has really kept value!

My husband is an auctioneer, and well versed in studying furniture and antiques. This is from 1953. At auction, without the tray in our area, it would probably go from $200-$400. Depends on the audience and how bad they want it. Remember on ebay, craigslist, etsy....The asking price is not always the selling price. Some of those items never sell, or you will find them later at a reduced price.

Also, prices vary around the USA. Some older furniture is less expensive in Indiana and Ohio, because many furniture companies were in that area, and the local market was flooded. The same piece may be $100 less there, than it might sell for in North Carolina.

Read the serial # backwards, and you will see it was manufactured April 28, 1953.

It is worth is the $200 range. It would be worth $25-$35 more if it had the shelf.

The Lane waterfall style cedar chest was the best selling style for a long time but it now appears this may no longer be the case.
eBay sold listings show 7 Lane chests sold in the past several months and all were more of the 'unusual' style and no waterfalls.

Some of these chests have shipping available but most were local pick up only. Freight shipping will cost between $200 - $400 and not too many people will add that to the amount of the chest.

Do you know first hand that your chest is missing a shelf as I can see no evidence of where a shelf would fit. A large portion of Lane chests never had shelves so be sure you look on the inside for marks or evidence on where a shelf was fastened before you state that in your for sale listing.

You may not find your exact same chest listed or pictured as Lane made thousands of chests and as one appraiser put it; 'from what I'm seeing they all survived and are cropping up everywhere'. He then added: so why is it so difficult to find 2 of the same kind?'.

Your area will determine the final value of your chest so all you can do is list your chest for sale at a higher price and show best offers considered as well as free local pick up.

Wait for several weeks and if no offers then lower your price and wait again.

Be very sure to take good pictures and also show all marks and numbers on your chest.
