My MTD ride on lawn mower runs great, but quits when I let the clutch out. It is model 13ab662f516 13.5 HP in perfect, hardly ever used shape.

Check filter and spark plugs!
if the mower runs fine and then dies when you let out the clutch it sounds like a safety switch this switch there are three one on the clutch rod one under the seat one on the blade engagement lever most like the one under the seat ut you may have to test them all
Check the carburetor and the fuel line.
Sounds like you do not use this very often and you left gas in the tank the last time you put it away. if this is the case you'll need to drain the tank and clean it.
Check the entire undercarriage for nests...like wasps or mice (do this very carefully cause if it is wasps, they are not happy having their nest poked.
Often they (critters and wasps) build them under the mower and it wrecks havoc with the machines. My friend has taken to putting bags of mint around her mower to help keep mice away. Nothing works to keep wasps away though :(
