Coconut Fiber Christmas Angels - finished angelThe coconut tree is a major part of our life here on the island. We use coconuts to drink, eat, cook with, and even make oil from them. The leaves are used to build houses and the fiber from the husk can be used to make ropes. The coconut tree gives us two different types of fiber we can use. One type of fiber comes from the inside husk of the coconut and the other comes right off the tree. The fiber that comes from the tree is a material type of fiber can be used to make lampshades, costumes, or even crafts for our home. I decided this year to make my Christmas tree and all the decorations from the coconut tree.

Steps:

  1. Cut open an old cat food plastic bag. These bags are very thick and they make a great base for the angel. Wipe out the inside of the bag to make sure you get all the crumbs out of the bag that the food has left behind.
  2. Coconut Fiber Christmas Angels - cut bag open and wipe clean

  3. On a piece of paper to draw your design for the base of the angel and the angel wings. Cut them out and now trace the base of the angel onto the white part of the sack. You will need to cut them out after you are done.
  4. Coconut Fiber Christmas Angels - create angel template on white paper

Coconut Fiber Christmas Angels - trace the cone shape onto the white side of the bag

  5. Roll up the cone of the angel and use masking tape to put it together. You will want to cover the complete base with masking tape. This makes it easier for the glue to stick to the surface of the plastic.
  6. Coconut Fiber Christmas Angels - roll the cone shape and secure with tape

  7. Now take the wing design you have made and place it on the coconut fiber. With your pen trace your design and cut out the wings. When working with coconut fiber you will notice that some areas of the material are a lot thicker than other areas. You will want to use these areas when cutting out your design. This makes it where the fiber will not fray. You will also need to cut the base of the angel out of coconut fiber. This will cover the plastic base of the angel.
  8. Coconut Fiber Christmas Angels - trace the wing template onto the coconut fiber

  9. Use the coconut fiber inside the husk of the coconut to make the head. You will need to pull out some of the fiber, wrap it around the pom pom and tie it at the bottom with a piece of string. Make sure you leave some of the fiber at the bottom so you can glue the head in place.
  10. Coconut Fiber Christmas Angels - make head with internal fiber, wrap fiber around pom pom and tie with cord to prepare for gluing in place

  11. Glue the base of the coconut material onto the base of the angel. You will do this with the hot glue gun. When done, take your scissors and snip off the top of the cone so the head can be glued in place.
  12. Glue the head in place by feeding the coconut fiber through the opening at the top of the cone. Hot glue the head in place. Add the wings to the back of the angel. You can now use small shells or beads to make the arms for the angel and if you want a design around the head. Now the angel is ready to sit on the tree or add a small cord at the back of the angel to hang on your tree.
