Bottlecap Pincushion - looking down on pincushionThis is a simple way to make a small pincushion from a plastic bottle cap. You could also attach a small loop of elastic band beneath it and wear it on one of you fingers as you sew.

Steps:

  1. Wrap some fabric around the bottle cap to find out how much you will need to cut. You'll want overhang on both edges so you can tuck it in for a clean finished look.
  2. Bottlecap Pincushion - wrap fabric around the cap

  3. All together, you will need one for the sides, one for the bottom, and another large circle in a contrasting colour to make the top cushion.
  4. Bottlecap Pincushion - fabric pieces needed to cover cap and make cushion

  5. Place some glue around the sides of the bottle cap.
  6. Bottlecap Pincushion - add glue to the side of the cap

  7. Use your clothespin to hold the fabric onto the bottle cap until it dries.
  8. Bottlecap Pincushion - wrap with fabric strip and hold in place with a clothespin until dry

  9. Make a bunch of small snips on the overhanging fabric. Glue these strips over the bottle cap.
  10. Bottlecap Pincushion - make snips in the edge, fold over and glue in place

  11. Now glue the little fabric circle over the strips.
  12. Bottlecap Pincushion - glue fabric circle over the snips

  13. Cut more snips on the overhanging piece on the other side.
  14. Bottlecap Pincushion - make snips in the other edge

  15. Glue the strips into the bottle cap. Let dry.
  16. Bottlecap Pincushion - fold in and glue snipped edge to inside of cap

  17. Now sew a running stitch all around the edge of the larger round fabric piece.
  18. Bottlecap Pincushion - sew a running stitch around the edge of the larger circle

  19. Pull on the string to gather it up, stuff with cotton, then sew it shut.
  20. Bottlecap Pincushion - pull the thread to gather, stuff, and sew closed

  21. If you have some lumpy cotton bits, you can easily move it around with your needle to fill in the spaces for a nice rounded look.
  22. Bottlecap Pincushion - adjust the stuffing with a needle

  24. Bottlecap Pincushion - glue the ball into the open end of the cap, pushing in down into the glue

  25. Add some decorative trim around the edge, if desired.
