finished flag wall hangingWith some Americana yarn colors, buttons, paperboard, and glue you can make this fun flag. It was inspired by one made with fabric yo-yos, but thought I could make them with little circles of yarn.

Total Time: About 3-4 hours

Yield: 1

Source: Saw a YoYo photo on Pinterest and did it like this.

Supplies:

  • 2 each oz burgundy, tan, and navy yarn ($0.00-1.00)
  • 1 each hot glue gun ($0.00)
  • scissors
  • darning needle
  • 1 ft scrap fabric for hanger. ($0.00)
  • 1 medicine bottle 1" or larger. ($0.00)
  • 1 oz white crochet thread ($0.00)
  • 1 size J hook ($0.00)
  • 1 each poster board in white ($1.00)
  • 12 each white buttons ($.25)

Steps:

  1. With the J hook, chain 2 and make 11 double crochets in 1st chain. Join with a slip stitch and break off, working in the tails. I tied them together in the back, but you don't have to as long as they are hidden beneath when glued.

  3. For this pattern, you will need 32 burgundy, 26 tan, and 12 navy.
  4. With your white crochet thread, sew the buttons onto the navy circles. They don't have to be super secure, but just enough to make them look authentic.

  6. Again, you can tie them in the back or leave them alone.
  7. Measure your rows as they can go astray fast and hot glue is not forgiving. I used a piece of paper the width of the circles and made little dots to keep them straight.
  8. When you have your pattern of 4 rows of each of the burgundy and tan, begin to glue them to the board. Hot glue can burn, so have an old medicine bottle to press it down.

  10. The final results will look nice when the poster board is trimmed around each border circle like I did. But, you can carefully trim it to border the flag. Or, you can start on the bottom left corner and trim it close to the edges so it doesn't show.

For the hanger, I glued one end of a strip of one sided fabric, then twisted it around and glued the other side.

    N-JOY!!
