These haunted gingerbread houses are a fun way to enjoy making a gingerbread house in October! You can find readymade kits at stores like Trader Joe's, Costco, and Joann Fabrics or you can make your own with graham crackers.

The gingerbread kits are great, they are easy to build and the final outcome looks beautiful, but they can be expensive especially if you need more than one for your family. The graham cracker houses were harder to put together, but the kids still had a really fun time.

Supplies:

  • gingerbread kit or graham crackers
  • royal icing
  • candy for decorations

Steps:

  1. First you want to build the gingerbread house and let it sit for at least 10 minutes to dry. If you are using graham crackers you can cut two of them to a point which will be the pitch of the house. We had a bit of trouble getting the graham crackers to hold their shape. A teacher friend of mine gave me a good tip, she said that you can use a small milk carton (like the ones they give out in many elementary schools) as a scaffold. Build the house around the carton that way it can't break and collapse inward.

  3. After your structure is built and has had time to dry, you can start decorating your haunted house. You can place a line of icing and then cover it with candy or you can place a dot of icing onto the back of the candy and then place it onto the house.
  4. Display as a decoration or enjoy eating it.
  5. My favorite touch on my haunted gingerbread house was how the roof turned out. I cut black licorice into about 1/2 inch pieces then in half the long way and used these pieces to make a creepy roof tiles. Start at the bottom and work your way up.
