Husband and I just got rid of our waterbed, and have gone to a regular bed. But we can't find a headboard we like. We are thinking of making our own, but need ideas. We live in a new house, but it was built to resemble an old farmhouse. We have antiques all throughout the house, so, we are wanting to keep with this theme.
So far, my ideas have been to make a headboard (king) out of:
old barn doors
old wood panel door turned sideways
2 or 3 wagon wheels side by side
We would like more ideas, and husband is wanting something perhaps with a shelf.

I love the old barn doors look. That would be amazing. Especially with the farmhouse style you have.
Something with burlap might be interesting. I saw a roll of it on clearance last night at Walmart for $5. (garden section). It had a loose weave. I have no specific ideas for the burlap @ this time, though.
In our old apartment we had huge bedroom. I took a king size sheet and just used tacks to attach it to the wall for our headboard. We had nightstands. I attached a curtain rod near the ceiling and then draped some fabric over it. It was really stunning.
For a huge room - it was a great focal point. If you're going to put shelves on top of the fabric - you need to make a hole in the fabric first - if you don't the fabric will bunch when you try to use a screw on it. Just cut an 'x' in the fabric where you want your holes, then cut the small pieces away - then insert your screws.
Bonus - we had a king size sheet that we later used for curtain, and a bunch of everything else!

May I suggest making a small canopy for the head of your bed or a large one for that matter, from gathered burlap with long flowing sides to the floor and then add shelving as your sweetheart would like. I would decoupage burlap on the shelving first before adding them to the wall so it all flows. You could add a lovely DIY swag at the top and centre of the canopy fashioned from things you've found in nature added with a glue gun perhaps.
