Mouthwash Keeps Cats from Urinating on Furniture

Bronze Feedback Medal for All Time! 102 Feedbacks

I'm not going to tell you what the smell was like. All of you who have this problem know the odour too well!

I took in 3 feral cats and they decided that their litter box was going to be inside my Laz-Y-Boy recliner! They would crawl up inside it from the back, do their thing and sneak away. It took me quite a while to figure out where the stench was coming from.

I solved this problem by flipping the chair upside down, vacuuming it thoroughly, scrubbing it with Lysol, and letting it dry. Then I filled a small spray bottle with mouthwash and sprayed every piece of wood in the frame, being careful not to get the metal parts wet. Then I went around and flipped over all the rest of my furniture and cleaned and sprayed it, as well.

This was about 3 weeks ago, and they have stopped using my furniture as a litter box. I actually saw one of them sneak out from behind their "safe hiding place" in a large dog crate, covered in blankets, and use the litter box. I can't put them back outside, due to our terrible winter weather, so I'm really happy with this solution. I hope this helps everyone else with this problem!

Source: I read somewhere that using mouthwash where cats are inappropriately urinating stops them from going back there. I think it was your "thriftyfun" site.

I have tried both Scope and Listerine mouthwashes. They both work well...the Scope smells better!

The spray made my furniture extremely sticky. I had to buy an upholstery
cleaner to clean it all off.

You're not supposed to spray it on the fabric, just the wood frame

They say cats are trying to tell you something when they don't use their litter boxes. Or they may have an urinary tract infection. Once cleared of having any infection you need to try to determine what they are saying. I dont like the new baby, new pet, I'm not getting any attention, I don't like this food, I don't like this litter. I've tried everything to deter my 4 yoa female spayed cat from going on the couch and roommate's bed. This just started to occurr about 2 weeks ago. Aluminum foil someone suggested. Cats won't walk on it, Myth that she busted!

I haven't found anything to keep her from going on it but have covered it with plastic. I use just plain 4 mil plastic from Lowe's. This way if I'm not keeping close eye on her or away from house the couch will not be spoiled or stained and plastic can be cleaned a lot easier than fabric. Once plastic is on the couch I cover with a couch cover. This may be an inconvenience but at least your furniture isn't ruined and your cat is still part of your family not having to be rehomed.

We have the same problem. Two male cats from outside and one female cat we have had since a kitten. She has been doing this for two years and I believe she is struggling with the two male cats in the house. We are at our wits end and believe she needs a home where she is the only cat. Hence we are looking for a home for her too.

Before it was just my one cat who would pee on the couch. We tried everything from going to the vet to spraying the couch with mouth wash and shoo spray from the pet store....but recently we've notice that there hasn't been any pee in the litter boxes and now it's both our cats peeing on the couch! They have choosen one of our couches as their new pee box.

What do we do? We got the couch as a gift and we can't afford to buy a new one. It's also gonna be winter soon and the furnace is gonna stink up the whole place. We keep cleaning it with apple Lysol hoping the citrus smell will over power the pee smell but if they keep peeing on it every night what can we do? I

Something I've found that helps with cleaning up the smell (Lyson doesn't do it for me) is Hydrogen peroxide, a teaspoon of baking soda and a drop of Downy soap. Mix it together, soak the area, blot, use a fan to dry the rest of the way.

You may need a lot more than 1 small bottle. Luckily Hydrogen peroxide is inexpensive :)
